RE: Logo Refinement, Addressing Technical Issues, Inspiring Others - Halogene - 05-25-2010

I like sev's number 4 best so far. Yet I am still not so sure about the beak. It should have more natural proportions and form - I think the lower part could still need some adjustment in terms of comparison with a picture of an original bird of prey. Also, I'd recommend not to keep the beak opened too much, as the bird should be crying out, not yawning (I suppose?).

RE: Logo Refinement, Addressing Technical Issues, Inspiring Others - sev - 05-25-2010

My attempts to address the beak issue:

Nr. 5, this is now closest to the original. Beak not as wide open as in Nr. 4:

Nr. 6, more realistic:

EDIT:
My last one for now. I tried to sum up all my previous drafts and address all issues: Simple shapes (iconifiable, clean high res), staying close to the original, more realistic beak.
Nr. 7

No.7 = No.1 Smile

I vote 7 or 5. Both are really awesome.

RE: Logo Refinement, Addressing Technical Issues, Inspiring Others - sev - 05-29-2010

Took me some time to experiment with different wing shapes, but went for the original design in the end.

So, here's my revision of the logo (based on the current official logo:

Trying to address the issues mentioned by -z-, this is what I was able to do.
Feel free to improve it.

I like! A lot. Big Grin

sorry sev, i don't like the idea that the head of the phoenix is between his wings...

RE: Logo Refinement, Addressing Technical Issues, Inspiring Others - CuBe0wL - 05-29-2010

Looks cool here Smile

That's quite an established pose. You have to consider the ring (second O) as part of the pheonix.

For icon I love what you've made, but I agree that the current logo is better.

RE: Logo Refinement, Addressing Technical Issues, Inspiring Others - Fisume - 05-29-2010

The Icon is well done, but I somehow don't like the way the wings are in the logo.

RE: Logo Refinement, Addressing Technical Issues, Inspiring Others - Roanoke - 05-29-2010

I like how it's going, but the wings seem oddly placed. I'll try and make them look right.

RE: Logo Refinement, Addressing Technical Issues, Inspiring Others - Cuinnton - 05-29-2010

absolutely amazing i thought it couldn't get better to be honest. I would adjust the icon so the bird in the middle is shifted left slightly so it is more uniform to the "quake symbol". I also agree Roanoke Smile

RE: Logo Refinement, Addressing Technical Issues, Inspiring Others - -z- - 05-29-2010

Awesome, looks good to me. Just in time, I plan on digging into the mainsite tomorrow and recallibrating all the odds and ends to prepare for the next step in growth. I will play with the sources more tomorrow as I make it to the design stage in the process and let you know if I come across any issues.

Actually, the original wings have awkward spacing at certain points. If you could clean that up it would look more professional and strong.

Maybe the body / tail can come down more to pay a little more homage to quake but that's just an after thought.

I tried that, but it looks strange (at least when I try to do it...)

I have uploaded a small revision. This should be my last one. I moved the head slightly left, added a glow to the icon, and improved the letters.

I experimented a lot with the wings this week, I'm not able to do it better. I'm glad if someone steps forward and improves/replaces my version.

Huh? Can it be done any better? I think not - it's perfect Big Grin

RE: Logo Refinement, Addressing Technical Issues, Inspiring Others - -z- - 05-30-2010

As I was looking to replace it today, I realized the wings are too large / bright / prominent and I believe some of this can be attributed to the size of the head in the circle. I think will a little more padding from the edges it would be more a idenitifiable image and the wings could be smaller. I do not have time to play around with this myself right now, I just put a lot of work into xonotic.org, I'm very tired.

RE: Logo Refinement, Addressing Technical Issues, Inspiring Others - Roanoke - 06-01-2010

I have named and described each element, fixed "phoenix" typos, grouped the text, and created layers. I have also updated the metadata and made the document boundaries fit the logo.

RE: Logo Refinement, Addressing Technical Issues, Inspiring Others - -z- - 06-01-2010

I think the head is still too large and the spacing on the feathers could use improvement.

Otherwise, thanks for making the source more organized

RE: Logo Refinement, Addressing Technical Issues, Inspiring Others - Roanoke - 06-01-2010

I didn't actually change the logo yet Wink
Edit: Right or wrong direction?
http://pics.nexuizninjaz.com/images/6fdtzv3vqnmi70pp865p.svg
Edit2: Vael pointed out to me that there is a lack of cohesion between the letters and the wings (they start inside the X, end outside the C). How can we fix this?
Edit3: Also, someone who knows what they are doing with masks should make the gradient mask the stripes so they don't show on white.

RE: Logo Refinement, Addressing Technical Issues, Inspiring Others - nifrek - 06-01-2010

[00:42] <nifrek> the letter "I" obviously takes less space then other letters, you have to put more space between letters on the right to compensate, like on the original logo

RE: Logo Refinement, Addressing Technical Issues, Inspiring Others - sev - 06-02-2010

OK, after some feedback from -z- I revised it some more.
My version is now closer to the logo on the website, with higher contrast. The head is slightly smaller, the wings are more subtle, the letters are new (to simulate the border glow effects with svg):

There's not too much of a difference yet, so it's hard to say...

No more stripes in r3 Big Grin

That's kerning. Putting in extra space between T I C looks very silly, have a look at the original logo without the pheonix. I think it's better to have clean kerning than a perfectly centered pheonix.

RE: Logo Refinement, Addressing Technical Issues, Inspiring Others - kay - 06-02-2010

I just like how the logo is now, and [Image: xloztzexk7c0fnyi3nb5.png] as icon for on desktop or dock.

RE: Logo Refinement, Addressing Technical Issues, Inspiring Others - Roanoke - 06-02-2010

Sev, did you make those changes from this source?
Kay, but the head itself is currently different from the icon head.

No, revision 3 is based on revision 1 (http://forums.xonotic.org/showthread.php?tid=442&pid=6657#pid6657).
