Weapons that lower/raise depending on whether they're being fired or zoomed in with - Lee_Stricklin - 03-24-2010

Don't know how doable it is, but I think it would make for a more immersive game if the weapons stayed lowered while the player is not zooming or firing. The weapon stays down mostly (but not completely) out of the players view and then raises when they hit either their fire or zoom keys. I think an option to enable that would be pretty cool, but I imagine some animation and a little coding would be needed to implement this.

So you're asking for animated weapons basically?

Why would you not want to see the weapon you've got out? Undecided

I wouldn't mind if it was optional, though.

not hidden.. But realisticly hold. You do aim all the time when walking with a gun in RL. Its something very very optional though for a non realistic shooter if one would ask me Smile

It would be cool if the weapon model moved upward to the center of the screen, similar to Call of Duty. The weapon would not completely move from the screen but rather back to the normal position. It would create a small, unavoidable time buffer between going to zoom and actually being zoomed. This would probably mean locking in the zoom time, right?

My comment about this idea: Yuck... realism ;-P.

I'm not a big fan of realism. Trying to make a game real usually ruins the game in my opinion. A game is meant to be fun and unreal. Not ordinary and real.

I'm a fan of ralism, but aliens aren't real (I think so Big Grin)
But... good idea

Or, the weapon could be in the same position all the time on your view, but others see it as "lowered". When you're firing it or your FOV drops below 80 or so, you hold the weapon up.

Yeah this sounds better it would be nice to see other's weapons move but I like mine to be in a fixed position.

Could be optional whether or not to fix it on the screen. Just like view bobbing. What I had in mind was that in a lot of games (Arena style and realistic, UT99 is a perfect example) you'll usually see the characters running with the weapons lowered close to waist level and then raise when scoped or fired. So lowering it a bit on the screen when it's not being fired or zoomed would make the game feel more realistic without sacrificing the unrealistic gameplay we all love so much.

I see that as a better idea.
