The few times I've seen it done, Xonotic (and before it, Nexuiz with the map Evergreen which promoted jetpack use and skiing) has properly supported a Tribes-style gameplay in it's open, terrain, and vehicular CTF maps. Because of this combined with the fact that Tribes and all of it's clones are completely dead right now, I think it would be a good idea to promote this play style. Typically large (but not always) maps that promote the use of jetpacks, vehicles, and skiing (done by bunnyhopping downhills and jetpacking up) were what made Tribes stand out and Xonotic could very easily support them if anyone were to take the time to make such maps. In addition to maps, a recharging jetpack also be a good idea to bring into the game specifically to promote that Tribes style.
The problem is that terrain maps are relatively difficult to do in Xonotic due to partially lacking editor and engine support. I guess you would be better off porting some of the gameplay you want from Xonotic over to the FTEQW engine, which has better support for terrain and also has ODE physics that could be made to work for Tribes like vehicles.

There are a few descent maps that can work with jetpacks. Crimson is one. Its a simple terrain map. Unsealted trial is good
And about the port of the whole game to this engine?
I found an old thread talking about it.
