It's called DuckDuckGo, supposedly it doesn't track you or anything like that but I find it to overall work better than Google does and it just has less crap in it. You may want to give it a look.

If you want to avoid big brother, steer clear of Facebook, skype, and cell phones(the hardest one, I think). Also any sort of proprietary software, really. You can use ekiga instead of skype, by the way.
