Looking to map, need some tips! - Gam0rdude - 03-09-2011

I am planning to map a lot for xonotic, so i must have some tips.
i have some questions, as well. I will need a lot of help.
1. What are all the formats for all of the filetypes in xonotic? (such as Models Textures and sounds).
2. What mapping program do you use, if so, then is there a tutorial on it?
3. How do i test the map and make sure it's big enough?
4. DO you have any general tips for me?
5. Also, where in the irc can i contact someone quickly if i need help?

hi,
First of all, most of your questions have answers on Xonotic forums or in Xonotic wiki Tongue

Second of all, they're also here:

1. http://dev.xonotic.org/projects/xonotic/wiki#Editing

2. http://dev.xonotic.org/projects/xonotic/wiki/Mapping

3. well, you can post it somewhere on forums (in editing section) or on IRC channel.

4. read tutorials? Smile

http://forums.xonotic.org/showthread.php?tid=64

5. on irc.quakenet.org
#xonotic
or, maybe better here:
#xonotic.editing

Good luck with mapping!!

the netradiant is recommended for xonotic, but also can use the gtkradiant.
the netradiant is a improved version of the gtkradiant. Any tutorial which is for quake (and uses the gtkradiant) can be used for xonotic too.

compile it and play it for yourself, if you easily can move around then its good. When you are unsure about it post it in the forum to get some feedback

First play as many different maps as possible for nexuiz and xonotic, if that isnt enough play some quake (the map design is similar to the map design you can use in xonotic). Then decide the gamemode, which your map should have. Then take a closer look at the maps you like and try to figure out what do you like about that map.
Try to adapt this in your map. Especially for your first maps try to keep it simple and take your time. Making a map can take many many hours till the point where you able to test it.
Set your goals to a reachable point so you dont get frustrated.

As kuniu said these 2 irc channels are the best why to get some help, but dont except instant help. The people there arent 24/7 only, sometimes you have to wait an hour or two.
