The Race Challenge - July - Cortez666 - 06-30-2011
Time for the next challenge!
The good thing is everyone is able to participate, no matter where you are, because you can do it locally.
This time its race again, but with different physics!
The Map is Piece o' Cake from FruitieX.

Goal: Complete the map as fast as possible! Start the map as normal and then open the console and type: exec physicsXPM.cfg
Rules:
- XPM physics only
- the fastest player has to make a demo or video to show off how he done it (so everyone gets a clue how to play that map)
post your times here!
Deadline: 1st August

That´s faster than I thought! I think the problem why I don´t succeed is that I´m too slow and miss the right points. I don´t know how you guys/girls can gain that much speed.

I have to say that I find that map HIGHLY frustrating.
I cannot even make it ONE time onto the first pillar.
And even if I run around all the noob paths I cannot make it onto the jump pad.
I don't get the XPM physics AT ALL, it seems. D:

It's like I am even watching that stupid youtube video and I can't see what I am doing wrong.
I mean, if I would even ONCE accidentally make it onto that pillar I'd be like "Hey, it's possible, I know I COULD DO IT". But I can't get there even ONCE. NOT A SINGLE TIME. Not to speak of any of the other non-noob paths.
I am not used to failing at a computer game challenge. This drives me mad.

I didn't try very often the jump pad I get so annoyed that I can't make it to the first pillar that I want to do that at least once first.

I suggest making pre-jump at the beggining (pillars). Also I admit that race is quite hard and annoying. What about changing it ? Cortez, Do You have anything in exchange?

This is a (Intermediate-Hard)map for more experienced players/XPM'ers, it will take a lot of practice for newer players to get relatively good on it.

How about record capture time contests(CTF)? This would also help other players know which routes to take during real matches.

I also managed to do the 180 degree ramp jump for the first time in that run, was at 1:27 at the checkpoint before the jump pad and from there on it took me like forever to get on it.

I have chosen this map for one particular reason.
You have to try this map more then once to reach the goal and doing it again improves your time a lot.

As much as I value a challenge, this one has proven to be highly frustrating to me, especially since I simply don't understand the XPM physics. I know how to strafe+forward and mouse turning into strafe direction but the speedometer seems to me like randomly showing acceleration. If I'd understand what I am doing wrong I would be able to deal with it more easily.
Most frustrating thing I had is going in less than 1:30 to the checkpoint before the jumppad, managing to get on the side track at first try, hitting the ramp and flying two inches too short to land on that bloody jump pad. That time I really almost ate my keyboard.
But please don't put a map like "turn" as next challenge :o)

Haha no no I deliberately misunderstood YOU. I am looking forward to it though I just realized in order to go the long way to the jump pad you don't have to take the whole way up the loop at all... I'll try it some more times though I really get pissed off more than any other time in Xonotic by the seemingly random way how the jumps just don't fit the bumps. You really have to go slower as you wish because you wouldn't be able to make the bumps at all.
And I still don't get how XPM works. Is there an explanation to this anywhere?
Actually playing this map is the first time I ever got angry at the game. EVER.
