Xonotic-autobuild-downloader version completely ignores this Buffalo MSGP1601BK with joystick=1. Nexuiz sees the buttons. W7. Any suggestions?

Are you using the same engine for Nexuiz and Xonotic (i.e. glx or sdl) ?
I think sdl is better for joysticks but I'm not sure.
