How to own a spambot - MirceaKitsune - 11-11-2011

I rarely post in the off-topic thread, but this felt too funny not to share. An old friend's account got hacked several months ago, spamming me with advertising and simulated conversations every now and then. Ever since Steve Jobs died, this particular bot keeps advertising about it, saying Apple is giving away 5000 free MacBooks in his memory (lol). This time, I got fed up with it, so I decided to own this bot Smile I also made use of the bot's programming, which makes it say "no?" whenever you say the word "spam" in a conversation (to pretend being a real person). Be warned of ugly word Tongue And yes, my background is ponies.

Spam Bots Are Also People!

People who decide to install another cute little screensaver, that is. Or open EXE files from shady porn sites. Or decide that the computer is running too slow and get a free speeder-up/virus scanner. And then they wonder why their telephone company complains about too much outgoing message traffic. Nobody is 100% savvy, but there is a difference between not savvy and idiot.

Though spambots themselves are dumb electronic repeat monkeys. Shame, really: All this distributed computing power could, in theory, run a relatively bright AI, both adaptive and self-evolutionary. On the other hand, such AI having control over millions of computers around the globe... Better hardcode those Asimovian laws, people!
