Cvar Documentation a good idea? - rocknroll237 - 02-15-2012

Hey guys,

Now I know certain people (Samual... Big Grin) might not like me posting this, but I was wondering how many of you would support proper documentation of Cvars like g_balance_electro_combo_speed (basically the custom variables in the advanced settings menu)?

I discussed this with Samual and he said he'd rather people didn't document the Cvars as it could lead to people setting up servers with different styles of gameplay, leading to inconsistencies.

What do you guys think?

What does "proper documentation of Cvars" mean?

RE: Server madness? - Mr. Bougo - 02-15-2012

A first step would be documentation. Because currently there's no such thing for balance cvars. We need to make a list of things that anybody could do but still takes some time to complete, this is one of them.

EDIT: also, can you give your thread a more related title? What does this have to do with servers or madness?

@Spaceman, basically the Cvars are custom variables which are lines of code which can be edited to change various aspects of gameplay. They are found in the 'advanced settings' menu (on the misc tab in settings). Afaik, documenting them means explaining what they do. Look at this (incomplete) PDF.

@Mr Bougo, I've changed the name of the thread... I've explained why it might lead to crazy servers in my first post.

Oh okay, I see. Well, I don't know. If people want to change the settings they'll figure it out on their own. They know how to change gravity yet you don't see all servers using different gravity settings. Besides, don't we have "pure" server labels?

Yeah, those were my thoughts exactly. Samual remains sceptical, however... Tongue
