A Few Viral Marketing Ideas for Xonotic - evit - 03-22-2010

Hello Everyone,

I think we could create a big community buzz by getting a real marketing team (yes, I'm volunteering) and doing some very basic things.

Contacting key open source bloggers/podcasters/vloggers and asking them to cover the project.

Write some articles for all the major open source magazines, etc...

Having a video: "intro to Xonotic" contest... Propagating these video's to all video websites under CC licenses.

Start to introduce Xonotic to Undergraduate and Grad schools around the area of game programming in the hope to get interest brewing...

I have about 1000 more but I'm gonna stop for now...

Your thoughts? Reactions?

I totally agree with the things you said there, evit. Kind of a spreadfirefox type campaign. Maybe make http://spread.xonotic.org/ be our new marketing HQ. Give out nice banners, buttons, etc for website owners. Have a enticing reward of top promoters get a link-back, just like with spreadffx.

Organization and marketing are key to success of this project. It's no fun to play a game which nobody is playing, and that's a vicious cycle.

Another idea would be to partner up with another prominent site/forum, and perhaps make artist/map competitions. This would help draw artistic (and maybe other) talent to the project, and would be good marketing by promoting the game to said forum.

For example, if you needed some inspiration and work on how a new gun should look, or some ideas for new characters or clothing for them, talk with the owners/runners of forum/site x (as an example), and set up a competition and appropriate thread. Artists would then submit work fitting a certain criteria like certain details on what the gun is/does, your best sci-fi explanation of how it works and an idea of to what end of the scale (realistic to cartoony) the style it should be done in.

Other examples to look for inspiration would be things like the Ubuntu Flickr group where artists and photographers can add their work for consideration to be included in Ubuntu as a desktop background, alongside the Free Culture Showcase where again works can be submitted for inclusion.

If anyone has ideas for marketing, send me a PM. I did the PR push early Monday morning for Xonotic, and -z- and I plan on doing more organized marketing efforts in the future. We'll especially need help with Non-US marketing. So PM me with your interest in getting involved in these efforts and I'll happily recruit you.
