Running server in a VM - Frogging101 - 03-19-2012 Hi, I'll be starting up some Xonotic servers soon. I want to run multiple servers on my machine for different games. Some of these game servers run only on Windows, and Xonotic works better on Linux. How well would a Xonotic dedicated server run inside a Linux VM on a windows host? Would it be slow? laggy? Would the VM limit the connection speed or performance? I have a quad core AMD Phenom II, 6GB of RAM running Windows 7 64-bit. I'll be using VMware Player (But if there's a better free VM software please suggest it). RE: Running server in a VM - tZork - 03-20-2012 I doubt the VM overhead makes up for the possibly (we have no comparative benchmarks for that, so no one actually knows what platform is better performance wise) better server performance on Linux. Afaik Xonotic server runs well on windows too (be it a bit more complicated if you want to build it on the server too). As long as your hardware and vm software support some sort of virtualization, performance should be fine running it in a hosted OS, tough (proly w/o too). RE: Running server in a VM - divVerent - 03-20-2012 The VM won't help at all. The reason why Xonotic server runs better on Linux is better scheduling. However, a VM would as a Windows process too, and thus would be bound by the same task scheduling as the Xonotic Windows exe file would be. So there won't be any performance advantage by using a VM (but there could very well be a disadvantage). |
