Texture corruption with Intel graphics - zykure - 11-28-2012
Hi all! I'm reporting some severe graphics problems that seem to be linked to the Intel on-board graphics family (Intel HD graphics etc.). There are at least three users affected by this bug: egal, qmint, and myself. All of us are using either Ubuntu or Linux Mint, so this bug might be limited to Ubuntu systems, but I'm not sure about that.
Please have a look here for the full bug report: http://dev.xonotic.org/issues/1351
This is also the place to report if you're also affected by this bug, but it's still a good idea to post your problem in this thread as well.
And here's an example of what I'm talking about:
RE: Texture corruption with Intel graphics - Mr. Bougo - 11-28-2012
Can you provide exact specs for the hardware and driver versions? Also, the Xonotic version and a comparison with the latest autobuild if you're not already using that.
Please also provide some sort of history for the problem. When did you notice this first? Has it ever worked fine on the hardware? If yes, what has changed since then?
RE: Texture corruption with Intel graphics - zykure - 11-28-2012
Of course, here are some hwspecs that might be helpful. Please tell me if you need some info that's missing here.

Oh, and for the history. Up to about 4 weeks from now, everything was running fine on my Ubuntu 12.04 (with latest drivers). Then I decided to upgrade to Ubuntu 12.10, and afterwards noticed this kind of texture error for the first time. I was using an inofficial set of graphics drivers then (ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers), and there were other problems during/after the upgrade, so I wasn't sure if this problem was really a bug in the software.
Therefore I decided to re-install my system a few days later, and wanted to check how it works after a clean install without any fancy drivers. However, the corrupted textures were still there, and this also didn't change after switching to the oibaf drivers again. (I'm currently using them because if it really is some driver problem, I guess it will be fixed in the oibaf version before it's merged into the official driver package.)
I'm using the Xonotic XCP version that asyyy put together, dunno the exact autobuild version of that (console says: "Version: Xonotic build 01:09:55 Jul 22 2012 - release"). I also tried deleting my userdir, therefore using default settings, but this didn't help either. (The only "solution" I found is setting "vid_soft 1", skipping OpenGL and using SW rendering instead. Of course, this doesn't help performance very much...)
RE: Texture corruption with Intel graphics - Liquid Sin - 11-30-2012
Looks like I ran into the same issue, try this. r_texture_dds_load 0 its called "Avoid lossy texture compression" in the effects menu and gl_texturecompression_sky 0 also re-enable openGL then vid_restart

Dude, thanks! That's exactly the "fix everything" command I was looking for
Of course, I fiddled around with the other, similar settings because with just r_texture_dds_load my texture still looked like crap. So, my current settings are this:
Code: r_texture_dds_load 1
gl_texturecompression_color 0
gl_texturecompression_lightcubemaps 0
gl_texturecompression_sky 0
The first one needs to be set to 1 because otherwise some textures are missing (e.g. those for all the items). Then, the main setting that fixes my textures is the _color one. _lightcubemaps is needed to fix some textures on shiny surfaces, e.g. weapons in overkill. And lastly, the _sky setting fixes my skymaps (although I'm now used to play with r_sky 0 ).
There are some other settings like this, and now that I know where to look, I might disable more of those if I notice any still corrupted textures. Right now, these three settings at least fix the majority of errors on my system.
Now we should figure out what exactly is causing that problem. We narrowed it down to having something to do with texture compression, but why is it only happening in Xonotic afaik??
RE: Texture corruption with Intel graphics - Liquid Sin - 12-12-2012
I was just messing around in Xonotic on a fresh Mint 13 install. The texture corruption is gone but so is the option set the texture quality above low via the slider in the effects menu.
I'm pretty sure this has to do with S3 Texture Compression (S3TC) before I was testing out drivers from the Xorg-edgers PPA just for the hell of it. I had libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0 installed from the edgers ppa. libtxc-dxtn-st2c0 isn't installed by default on mint 13 which looks fine without it no corruption but only the low quality texture option so I installed libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0 version 0~git20110809-2.1 from the package manager and the skybox corruption returned along with a few other textures not showing correctly but the option to set the texture quliaty above low up to best was available I ended up having to set gl_texturecompression 0 and gl_texturecompression_sky 0
So to sum it up
- Plain Linux Mint 13 Maya 32bit install
- Installed libtxc-dxtn-s2tc libtxc-dxtn-s2tc-bin libtxc-dxtn-s2tc-dev
- Set gl_texturecompression 0 and gl_texturecompression_sky 0
- I can now choose whatever texture quality I want, and it looks good.
- Maps I tested it with, stormkeep Spiderctf-v2r2 and fickle-ctf_26may2012
- GPU Intel 4500MHD
- Xonotic 0.6
Stormkeep textures low
Stormkeep textures best
Fickle textures best with gl_texturecompression 1
Fickle textures best and gl_texturecompression 1 gl_texturecompression_sky 1
Fickle textures best gl_texturecompression 0 gl_texturecompression_sky 0

RE: Texture corruption with Intel graphics - zykure - 12-13-2012
Hmm, on my system I need to turn off a lot more of the compression options. It's only on some maps that seem to use texture overlays (?), e.g. skycastle (see screenshots).
@Liquid-Sin: Could you check if this is also the case on your system?
skycastle with texturecompression 0, texturecompression_sky 0 (Liquid-Sin's settings):
skycastle with (texturecompression 0, texturecompression_sky 0, texturecompression_color 0:
So, to avoid any texture compression artefacts I'm currently I'm running with every compression option set to "0":
Code: r_texture_dds_load 1
gl_texturecompression 0
gl_texturecompression_color 0
gl_texturecompression_gloss 0
gl_texturecompression_glow 0
gl_texturecompression_lightcubemaps 0
gl_texturecompression_reflectmask 0
gl_texturecompression_sky 0
gl_texturecompression_sprites 0

What card do you have?
Here is what I use, also r_texture_dds_load 1
RE: Texture corruption with Intel graphics - zykure - 12-13-2012
I have an Intel HD Graphics 3000 afaik (the one released with the Sandy Bridge architecture).

texture compression is very buggy on Intel HD Graphics family. I have HD 2000 + Win7, and there are similar glitches in Xonotic and Warsow for me.
