Why?

RE: What are the licenses to the maps: fe26, fickle, apace, astral, etc - TarxKran - 11-22-2013

I want to include them in a mod. I'm hoping that they are GPL. Why not? Unless that's not O.K.? Is it O.K. to mod xonotic or is it frowned upon? I like these maps alot, they have no copyright notices of any kind so they default to all rights reserved by law as far as I know.

If this is a thorny issue I'll drop it and not ask what the licenses of maps are and respect Xonotic third party contributions as off limits, sorry if I offended anyone.

Why ask?

Anyway, all those maps in git branches are not licensed under GPL until there's a merge request. Until then, you have to assume that the works are protected under standard copyright. I suggest you contact the individual authors if you need to clear up the licensing. There is no pending merge request for a map for now, so all those maps you list that are in git are in a gray area.

As for the maps that are released in packaged form, you should contact the authors if licensing is ambiguous. Map authors should really be encouraged to make their licensing clear, as AFAIK server admins don't even have a legal right to download a map and redistribute it otherwise.

EDIT: Have you looked inside the map pk3s for the few maps that are released in packaged form on this forum?

Just curious about the reasoning behind it.

RE: What are the licenses to the maps: fe26, fickle, apace, astral, etc - machine! - 11-22-2013

It should be no problem including them (if even needed, you don't need to include the map packages to be able to play the maps using your mod) but it's good you do it the right way. Smile I think Mirio wondered out of curiosity.

EDIT: mirio was faster than me, sry for duplicating Tongue

Yes, the .map is there, but there is no copyright notice, no license.txt, nothing. Alot of them were released here so I'm hoping the authors are still around, only nicknames are given in most of the files, pk3s, or git repos.

Technically the lightmaps are GPL Tongue I know that.

RE: What are the licenses to the maps: fe26, fickle, apace, astral, etc - Mr. Bougo - 11-22-2013

I'm not sure about the lightmaps being GPL.

As for contacting the authors, their git commits (if they are the ones who push) should contain an email address. Otherwise, send them a PM in this forum.

In practice no, but it's absolutely wrong to include copyrighted content without explicit permission in a derived work.

If it's a Xonotic server it should not be a big deal, but I guess it is not.

my maps listed here are licensed under GPLv2 or any later version.
but Reflection isn't mine, it's theShadow's map.

I meant if he hosted it like the current servers does (like mirio suggested), then it shouldn't be any problem since those maps are already served by Xonotic servers. If he include the map packages inside his distribution of the mod itself then of course licenses should be checked.

Under common sense, there should be no problem, as redistribution within Xonotic usage would be the intended purpose of the mapper most of the time. But the author is not granting server admins a license to redistribute the work, so they would be infringing on the author's copyright by redistributing the file.

By default, when somebody offers their map for download in a thread on this forum for example, you have to assume that it is only to play it locally or between networked clients possessing the map files. But redistributing the package is not allowed.

What is the license to imposion (by mintox) and it's assets http://beta.xonotic.org/autobuild-bsp/implosion-027b4b8a0bab0ced14bd5143a8336db211af12e3-0c841a27fa46f6da92c7fcaf07cfd04b0ea36d40/

Can the license of fe26 by monad and metal maze by dark slayer and its texture and other assets be ascertained or asked to be made gpl or cc/cc-by/cc-by-sa ?

What are the licenses of the songs by Archer? (Dark Horizons)

RE: What are the licenses to the maps: fe26, fickle, apace, astral, etc - Mr. Bougo - 12-07-2013

Again, you should ask the authors. Mintox' map is in git with no licensing information. It will be GPL-licensed when and if it hits the master branch.

I don't know what you expect from asking those questions here, honestly.

RE: What are the licenses to the maps: fe26, fickle, apace, astral, etc - TarxKran - 12-08-2013

I have asked the authors over PM. Though there have been responses from some contributors, there haven't been responses from the mappers. I post here as well hoping they or someone who can contact them will see. As J. T. Dawgtown says: swing at every ball.
