Your 2013 game of the year - Lee_Stricklin - 04-07-2014

I skipped doing this last year for some reason. Anyway, out of all the games that got released last in 2013, what would you say your favorites were?

My personal favorite of the bunch easily was Valdis Story Abyssal City which I impulse bought after watching the video for it on Steam. In my opinion it's a near flawless metroidvania sidescroller that stays fresh the entire playthrough. Beautiful art, beatuiful soundtrack, challenging gameplay, satisfying combat (picture elements from Devil May Cry mixed with stuff from the more action heavy Ys games), pretty kick ass boss fights, interesting enemies (including ones of demonic and angelic origin), interesting weapons, interesting player characters (which have vastly different playstyles), great story, amazing setting, tight controls, etc. It was pretty damn good. Only complaints I really have is that the developers intend to add to it and it shows in the product itself (there are things in the lore that says "coming soon" and the two characters they plan on adding are visible but not selectable on the start screen) as well as a couple bosses that were mathematically impossible for me to take down until I re allocated my stats. Those are really only minor complaints and a follow up to this would probably be a day one purchase or preorder for me.

Besides Xonotic I bought Trine 2 which I enjoyed a lot, especially its voice acting.

Nothing really, game that come out lately are unimaginative forgettable crap.
Games I enjoyed were mods:
Cry of fear - not really 2013 but was released on steam
Underhell

I enjoyed :
Shadow Warrior - ok, no MP, not ultra great
Arma 3 - long term fan, wouldn't recommend it or call it goty
DayZ - played it once, not in the mood these dayz

Just play Vampire Bloodlines, its one of the best game in history.

Indeed!! With the community patch it's a lot of fun, I think they fixed almost everything which was broken in the official release.

I'm just playing through F.E.A.R. again, that slow-mo combat is just neat! Big Grin

2013 really was a bad year for gaming in my opinion, especially in regards to AAA games on PC. The only good stuff that got released in my honest opinion were indie titles that most people don't pay much attention to, in particular the one I mentioned in the first post (which honestly is one of my all time favorites, so it's not just merely an alright game released in a bad year).

I have completely lost faith in the industry and "AAA", every game that comes out a cinematic action rpg with stealth aimed at casuals.

Rise of the Triad remake, definitely!

Fun, but terribly optimized. Same with Shadow Warrior, they're a blast, but they hog resources that they shouldn't.

Indeed, curse those Unreal engines! I've had to play ROTT with 12fps. But.. I still had an adequate blast and the dialogue for some of the enemies were hilarious. Regardless it's optimal shortcomings I still find it better than rest of the 2013 game industry product.
