Music style brainstorming

#26
That was the vibe i was getting from a few of the xonotic people when they answer some of my questions.

Also if the yoda one is to long maybe changing it to something else because amazing is getting quite stale now.

And why would the new sound bite not get stale?

I imagine it would as well. But it would be more current. The other is already at that stage. But i agree with the earlier post of the electric i think that would go well with the space theme.

lol That reminds me of one I heard in one of the Frag of the Month videos. The person who recorded the video switched out what was at the time "Awesome, did Yoda show you that?" with "That's gotta be aimbotting!" in the same voice. It was pretty funny.

I think its not important to speak about genres. We have many music contributers here and I think it would be great if many songs would be included from all different genres.
The only problem is the download size of the game itself but there could be additional soundpacks that people could download.

#33
If the download size gets too huge, we could always include newer content in official map packs.

The talk about genres was only to provide orientation, not to limit us within a fixed set. In fact we're totally open to any genre .. that doesn't feel too weird inside the game Smile

About the size of tracks we set a soft limit of 10MB per track (ogg compressed), in order not to bloat the overall size of the game download. But sure if we ever make additional soundpacks this limit could be higher.

hey, i just read through the music + legal wiki on the xonotic redmine
and thought, maybe this link could be good sound resource next to freesound:
http://ccmixter.org

lots of cc-by stuff on there

That doesn't work, in order for a sound to be included, the source file must also be distributed.

It must also be GPL compliant. If it can't be used for commercial purposes, then it is not GPL compliant.

oh man... why make it so hard...

ok now i repost my proposal again:

hey, i just read through the music + legal wiki on the xonotic redmine
and thought, maybe this link could be good sound resource next to freesound:
http://ccmixter.org

there are lots of samples under the CC-BY (attribution) license (which allows commercial uses) available there.

better?

But we do not have the sources of the samples (as in, a project file or MIDI file). As I understand it, that is necessary for inclusion in xonotic package.

-.- sources of samples ???
should i upload a snare drum (physically) ?

the source of the samples is not neccecary. (its like saying you have to have the source of the grammar used in comments on code = not possible) only the license of the samples must me correct.
and if someone had the !awesome! idea that the sample sources should be 'open source', he definetly has never ever ever ever ever ever made music.

sorry.

EDIT: just thought of this: you can have the source of samples made by synthesizers as that is digital, but most samples come from an real source (analog), and the thing that comes closest as a source is either the 'source', meaning the real instrument, voice or whatever, OR the waveform, which is essentially the sample itself.

EDITno2: i somehow feel trolled o..O

I must have misunderstood you, I thought you were talking about songs rather than small sound files of one drum note or something.

w00t LFO!!
would certainly fit the sci-fi theme.
not too distracting, a bit ambient, and mostly consistent. yeah. i would say if a track similar to would be done, id hit it.

disregarding that, i found another AWESOME source for samples:

http://freepats.zenvoid.org/olpc-sounds/

these are the samples collected for the olpc project, all are cc-by (gpl compatible) in flac format.
this is a HUGE amount of samples (we're talking +6gb of samples here, omg!).

EDIT: also available as torrent: olpc_sound_samples_v2.torrent

Chiptunes, CC-BY-NC-ND (gpl incompatible if I understand correctly), but there are several high-energy albums that I think fit xonotic.
http://www.8bitpeoples.com/discography/by/receptors
http://www.8bitpeoples.com/discography/by/trash80

Shemusic, more great chiptunes (by-nc-nd too though)

Of course, there's also the possibility that the artists will waive some of the conditions for xonotic if we ask nicely. Generally these people aren't uptight or restrictive, they just want to protect their work from places that they do not want to see it.

I might try developing something in that mood, but I don't promise it will be good Smile

Great tunes there! Listening to them now Smile I don't think they would fit Xonotic good but they are good anyway!
