What the hell? 2.5.3 finished?

#1
No download link, but I found this to be interesting:

http://dev.alienTRAP.org/projects/roadmap/nexuiz

The alienTRAP Nexuiz roadmap says all the issues are taken care of, but I haven't found a download link anywhere. Weird. If this gets released it will probably be the last release of GPL Nexuiz.

since when has the last issue been closed?
if its not too long ago, they're probably still in the process of making the packages for the os'.....
if think download releases only happen once all the packages are ready for delivery...
no hard feelings.

Should Xonotic fork Nexuiz 2.5.3?
Reply

I think we can take the code directly, without doing the fork again. I mean just take what has changed. AFAIK the license allows this.

Maybe that Nexuiz 2.5.3 will be about Xonotic 1.0 Smile

Still don't see any download link. I wonder if any of the devs could pull anything from the SVN, maybe some of that would be useful for Xonotic assuming that the license didn't change for 2.5.3.

Come on people... You just have to click on the activity link, which is right next to the roadmap link, to see that nobody has touched Nexuiz code for over a month.

The whole damn Nexuiz GPL website is practically dead since the news broke out.

My prediction? Nexuiz GPL will be left to the wayside as all the good developers swap teams for Xonotic (pretty much already have Big Grin) and then Console Nexuiz will just be another one of "those games" that come out for people to play inbetween big game releases.

I downloaded the svn and compiled for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X.
It should be the Unreleased 2.5.3 version of Nexuiz.
The Linux 32bit(i386) and 64bit(amd64) versions were compiled on Ubuntu 10.10.
The Mac OS X versions were compiled on Mac OS X 10.6.3 with Xcode 3.2.
The Windows version was compiled on Ubuntu 10.10 with mingw32.

More info from the dev site:

Linux needs libcurl3 installed for downloading maps from servers.

MAKE SURE TO BACKUP YOUR CONFIG FILES.(~/.nexuiz/data/config.cfg Or Nexuiz-2.5.3\data\config.cfg)

I have finally got a build confirmed working on Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger(intel).
Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger(intel) Apps only Download: http://ompldr.org/vN3J0MA/Nexuiz-2.5.3-tiger-test1.zip

MD5sum for Unofficial-Nexuiz-2.5.3.zip: 28464f0ec2c98ba6cf464d2fbc8eea38

Mac OS X users must download 2 files.

Both the Unofficial-Nexuiz-2.5.3.zip and the Nexuiz app and Nexuiz-SDL app download.

Then copy the 2 new appliciation files into the Nexuiz-2.5.3 folder.

If you are using Linux and have with older libraries and can't run Nexuiz 2.5.3 download these binaries.

Example: Ubuntu 9.04 and up.

Then copy them into the Nexuiz-2.5.3 folder.

2.5.3 is old news. Iirc morfar was considering releasing that before Xonotic 0.1beta, maybe he did so then...

However I hardly see how this can be a good thing in any way. Not only will it split the already small Xonotic community (people who will go play Nexuiz again and people who won't), but also the Nexuiz community in people that have found out about the release and people who haven't (seems like it wasn't a very official/visible release, so this gap likely remains big). Instead of putting energy in having players switch to 2.5.3, we need to put energy in getting players to switch to Xonotic.

Whoever made that release/announcement should do the best thing of notifying Nexuiz players that the free version of Nexuiz effectivly became Xonotic. We could quickly whip up a Nexuiz mod for them so that the gameplay remains almost identical, to make the transition a smoother experience. In the end everyone would benefit. They get a game that's supported by several developers again instead of zero, we get more players...

This shouldn't be rushed though, we should wait until the next Xonotic release.

What Fruitiex said, also 2.5.3 isn't even relevant any more, though I am grabbing the one you uploaded just out of curiosity.

Well I don't plan on it either.
Many people I've talked to about it has said they won't ether.
The forums for nexuiz are closed too.

Also the only one I know using it on Mac OS X is having audio problems.
Edit: Fixed the audio problems on Mac OS X.

But why? You can easily mod Xonotic to behave exactly as Nexuiz as far as gameplay is concerned... Plus get a bunch of improvements in content and functionality, not to mention that you'd actually help out in the further development of the project by attracting more players (not too much of a fun game if nobody plays it), and as such motivate developers.

Try contacting the Darkplaces developers so that a solution could be found.

This is a bit off topic but does this release mean that Nexuiz will go on for another year or just until the Nexuiz console game is released?

@quadratic

I play xonotic on a mac and have had no problems at all.

well, maybe thats because I am using the git development version, which i would suggest using over the alpha release anyway.

Then Mac version now has sound working 100%.

It was a problem with my compile.
I redownloaded the svn and recompiled it and now it works.

2.5.3 was finished over a year ago and I wanted 2.5.3 out before the first Xonotic release so we could play with some of the new cool features.
But the main reason why I never released it where because the engine was about 25% slower than 2.5.2 Sad
The second reason was because most people didn't want it to be released Tongue

And now that Xonotic 0.1 is out I see no good reason to release it.
