A strafe-jumping lesson from Hero

#1
Community member Hero, of the Profound Velocity clan, has released a new video detailing exactly how to strafe-jump. Learn to master this technique and you'll be flying around maps before you know it. Enjoy the video, and thank you Hero for making it!

OOOOOOH I was always strafing in the OTHER direction... It works, too, to some extent... But that explains why I am unable to finish most cts maps! THANK YOU!!

Also, nice music. Big Grin

Why the hell is this posted in the blog? This is a nostalgic mod, not Xonotic!

It's on the blog because I thought it was blog worthy. Problem?

People actually play cts, its not nostalgic, is there strafejumping in vanilla? I think it was removed in early xonotic.

3/4 of this physics, including strafig and circle jumps, is in vanila, albeit weakened and lenient.

Theory is always the easiest part, but like said on the video: "strafe jumping, is easy to learn but hard to master.". Just requires a lot of patience and practice. If you want I can teach you personally anytime! Smile

If someone is wanting to translate strafejump lesson's vid text in their own language, that would be great! Just contact me through forums or irc #Profoundvelocity @ qnet pV-Hero.

Does this type of strafejumping apply to vanilla xonotic servers?

XDF physics feel alot like quake strafing.. however everything seems to work dnifferently on the normal servers/duel servers.

It's confusing at times Sad

Good that you mention this! Smile

In the "standard" vanilla physics, strafejumping like in XDF is possible too, but it will not give you any acceleration when you have reached a certain speed (something around 600-700 qu/s, not entirely sure about that), from this point on, without using weapons like laser or the rocket launcher, you will get the best acceleration by only holding the forward key.

I'm probably not the only one that gets utterly frustrated by the maps that populate the XDF servers, since you can finish most of them only with mage-like strafe jumping skills. What is the map's name that you used for the tutorial, I'd like to have a long, wide and straight corridor without (!) pits pillars bumps edges spikes lava to run into, just for practicing strafe jumping. I still can't do it very well, and there's unfortunately really a few maps only where I can concentrate on strafe jumping.

Halogene

drop in to one of the racing servers when we are around, and we will find you a good map for training and some hands-on advices. That's the best way, if you are into racing.

And lets not exaggerate Smile Most maps aren't that good for initial training, but 50% is doable stright away and another 30% after week or two of racing. There is perhaps 5% of maps that are truly hard.

Sub

edit: you aren't likely to jump that first pad in Hero's tutorial map, unless you already have at least some racing skills.

Its good to practice and master your strafing level/skill in grid maps (straight pure strafing maps similar to the map that was used in strafejump lesson vid). There is a lot different grid maps. For example line(x) maps are great grid maps as they are offering more challenge.

Can highlight you few maps that you might like or seek for.
Xonotic DeFrag - Join/Run now! - balance changes <- server has such line/grid maps than:
line23
line25
line28
grid2
pornstar-slopin (going down)
kapten_grid

Sincerely Hero~

line27 ain't bad too Wink

Now, for circle jumping xpm-cj-noob is a good training map. Then there is Xyligan-Ghost for more strafing. And Ghost-xyligan is good for strafe turning, which btw. 75% of folks at XDF can't do right.
Still, best way is to join the server and learn from others.

Jep - The best way is to join a XDF server and practise, practise, practise ....

At least there are 4 servers for XDF:

fsgamers.org HOT BOX RACING - Australia based
Xonotic DeFrag - Join/Run now! - balance changes - Germany based
(Prophets) Runaway from Divination [XDeFrag] - Germany based
force-crusaders.org - Poland based (Mapdownload dont work?)

What I miss is some server for american players ... Tongue

Thanks all for your assistance! I'll try harder and now I know for which maps to vote when no one's around.
