I would very much like to be a help here, but all I know is how to make 2d images with GIMP. Could somebody give me directions on which (free) modeling software to use and tutorials on how to use them? I'll try to help as soon as I'm ready.

If you're looking for a way to start on blender, http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blender_3D:_Noob_to_Pro this seems to be pretty decent.
