List of Procedural Texture Generation Programs

#1
This is a repost of a thread I started on another forum. This is one of two threads I'm reposting here. I have a feeling they should be posted in the "Edit" forums, but I'm not entirely sure they belong there.

This list has not been updated in over two years so many of the links may not work. I cannot be arsed to bother to find which ones do and do not work.

If you find a non-working link, please make a post and I'll update the thread.

If you have anything to add to the top thread, or if you want to make additional changes, post here, send me a PM, or contact me on IRC.

Windows only, but might be ported to Mono in the future.)

Krusty's FX 2.0 beta
http://www.freewebs.com/krust_inc/krustyfx2.html
Dwonload for this can be reached at: http://www.ravingconcepts.com/plug-in_filters.html
[These are photoshop filters. They seem to date quite some time ago so there's a chance they might not even work with the newer photoshop versions. I'm not going to check them out.]

Terrain Texture Generator
http://www.insanesoftware.de/index.php?p...errain.php
[Someone confirm the license and usage on this?]

Genetic Texture Generator

Download for this can be reached at: http://www.texturemaker.com/download.php
(Free for non-commercial use only)

libnoise
http://libnoise.sourceforge.net/index.html

Kandid - A genetic art project
http://kandid.sourceforge.net/
(A system to evolve graphics. Graphics, in Kandid, is not drawn by hand. Instead new forms can be found using genetic algorithms. To achieve this aim Kandid simulates evolution using sexual reproduction and populations. But there is no fitness function in side the program. Only the user decide which images are interesting.)

Caustics Generator
http://www.lysator.liu.se/~kand/caustics/
(Caustics can be described as the light pattern you see at the bottom of a pool on a sunny day. - This tool will let you render such caustics patterns. The rendered images can be animated and used for realtime graphics and are tileable in both space and time.)

Iris
http://www.cinegraphics.net/product.php?location=Iris
(A quick easy utility for creating a variety of seamless texture maps. With Iris you can create thousands of textures by combining fractal noise, waves, horizontal and radial offsets and color gradients.)
[Just insert some fake information at the bottom of the page to get the program.]

Perlin Noise Generator
http://www.runicsoft.com/noisegen.php
(A nice little program to build some procedural textures based on perlin noise.)
[It's non-commercial according to the readme's inside zip. Source is included, however.]

texgen.zip
http://ged.ax.pl/~tomkh/sub64_en.htm

http://hme.sourceforge.net/
(A 2D program, used for creating, manipulating and viewing height maps.)
[This program is GPL for those who want to know ahead of time.]

Wilbur
http://www.ridgecrest.ca.us/~jslayton/wilbur.html
(A simple height field toy. It loads, processes, and saves height fields. It can calculate texture maps based on the height field data and color the map so the it shows both height and slope information. It can also be used to create synthetic height fields.)

Jesus Christ, this list is huge and awesome! Thanks!!
You could add one more: CrazyBump

It costs a bit, and is commercial, tough an excellent layer creator application.

If it links to geocities, it's defunct Tongue
http://validator.w3.org/checklink - Handy dandy tool.
Also, how many of these allow licensing the textures as GPL? I hear that's a problem with terragen images.

Resynthesizer is a useful plugin for Gimp for making tilable textures from arbitrary source material: http://www.logarithmic.net/pfh/resynthesizer

Be warned though that it eats CPU for lunch.

Started using .werkkzeug 3 recently, it's a really really nice tool, though documentation is poor. Allows to create textures of many types.
& It's free for use in non-commercial projects.

blender 3D also supports the creation of procedural textures, including a node editor.

there is a way to create normal maps with it as well, using this method

there might also be another way, but I can't remember right now

When I saw this thread, I couldn't resist. Big Grin

Here's another texture editing / generation tool which I have made:

http://cragegames.com/texture-designer

It's GPU-based (which means it's quite fast, even with big textures). Same as with all the other tools, feedback is welcome and so are feature requests. Smile
It also costs a bit but I think the price is really low, considering the fact that with some work, it can do almost everything that other texture tools can.

I'd like to suggest this:
https://sites.google.com/site/noiselab15/

at least because i developed it..

requires .net framework
