Once we have an idea of what the artistic style Xonotic will have, I say that we have a contest to see who can make the best Character model/Map to fit that style.

imho if someone wants to make an official map instead of doing a contest for it the person should make a nice base for the map and then take community suggestions to improve it. same goes for models. contests don't make sense especially since maps/models are ongoing processes that need to be improved for a long time

Good point. I just thought that maybe the idea of a contest would get more people involved.

I'm garbage at making character models, but I'd certainly give it a go -- well, depending on the art style that is settled upon.
