so yeah... never played any games from this genre and was wondering if anybody could suggest a few that are fun/popular

I know. And mud = wet soil.
Any MMORPG is essentially a MUD with graphics. Often muddy, too.
Well, except Diablo 3. But then again that game is mud in other areas too.
When you ask for a MUD game, you usually don't have MMORPG in mind.
I think of those text-based multiplayer RPG games when I think of MUD.
