They finally fixed the JACK/Pulse issue. I just played a song using Totem and routed it through JACK.

The possibilities include: Screencasts with sound. Pipe your track into Skype straight from the DAW. Record Skype conversations without using any specialised recorders.

Took 'em three years to do it.
Sounds nice, I'm not really into audio stuff though, but you seem to be so...

What's really jack and pulse, I'm using plane alsa and have heard you can do the similar with OSS4?

JACK is a de facto standard when it comes to advanced audio. PulseAudio is the desktop audio system that GNOME uses. For years, it was very hard to make them work together. But now they fixed it.

kde uses pulse too (at least id does in mint)
most distros use pulse now.... opensuse, ubuntu, mint, and fedora to name a few....
it's been integrated into KDE phonon since kde 4.5 came out....
