Steam overlay will intermittently crash Xonotic - DW_ - 06-14-2012

I prefer to manage my games with Steam for convenience's sake, so I added the 64-bit WGL binary to my game list. However, the problem comes when the in-game overlay pops up -- usually when a friend starts playing a game. Rendering freezes and sounds skips, eventually forcing me to CTRL-ALT-DEL into Task Manager and force quit Xonotic.

If it helps, here's my system:

Intel Core i7-2600 @3.4GHz
AMD Radeon HD 6670 1GB GDDR5
8GB DDR3 RAM
1TB Seagate Barracuda HDD

Steam version is always latest release.

There is a similar issue when running Steam Source Engine games through Wine. Unless you disable the ingame chat options, the Source engine freezes everytime on start. Maybe Steam can't play well with OpenGL? Can you disable the ingame chat option on a per game basis?

Nope; it can only be disabled per-game for Steamworks games. All others it's always forced on.

Steam overlay works ok for OpenGL on windoze, also works ok when using wine (played Torchlight through wine and had no problems with overlay).

edit: just tested this on windows - works ok for both sdl and glx binaries. Maybe it's something on your end... Or maybe it's the point that you are trying to run the 64bit binary through Steam which itself is a 32bit binary? ;-)

The 64-bit launching through 32-bit thing doesn't matter -- I can run the 64-bit DX11 UDK fine, the Steam overlay even works in it.
