Full Version: [Font] Concept 5 (Don't ask about v2-4)

I'm working on a possible custom font for Xonotic and invite fresh eyes to review it. Feedback is much appreciated.

The long-term goal is to extend it to the full ISO 8859-15 set, but that's a lot of work.
The first goal therefore is the full ASCII set, to support a complete, English interface.

Concept 1

It consists of letters A-Z, a-z and digits 0-9.

EDIT: File removed, Xolonium font is now included with Xonotic.

Concept 5

Lighter, bigger (now similar height as established fonts), sharper, more consistent. All hopefully resulting in improved readability.
Now includes the full ASCII set.

Font looks nice to me. Once it is done, we can accept it - but can you commit to later also adding the cyrillic character set to it as there seems to be quite some demand for it?
This looks great! would like to see in Xonotic.
I'd like to see this in the game too... I haven't tried the .pk3 but from the screenshot, it looks like all that needs work is spacing... Nice work, sev.

Edit: This is my 69th post. Just letting you guys know. XD
Also... for prioritizing the iso-8859-15 support...

I suppose it should be done in these steps:

1. us-ascii complete
2. iso-8859-15: ÄÖÜäöüß (German)
3. iso-8859-15: see this list: http://webdesign.about.com/od/localizati...des-fr.htm (French)
4. full iso-8859-15 set (other latin-script languages)
5. also add cyrillic set (Russian, Ukrainian)

I put German before French not because I am a German, but because it only needs 7 extra chars and French needs a lot more, and we do have quite some German (but also French) player base.

sev: does it make sense to finish them in that order?

Yes, I fully agree.
Fontforge should support to "link" glyphs, which should make it easier to add diacritical marks to existing glyphs (äàèé...). I'll have to read some more tutorials.

I can't commit to the cyrillic set (yet). These are largely new glyphs, and not too few. The fact that I can't read them isn't going to help either.
But, I will of course share all sourcefiles, as well as some guides on the metrics and design elements of the font. This makes it as easy as possible for anyone else to add glyphs.
Bump.

Added a new version in the 1st post.
Wow, just wow! Smile

I love how the font looks; how every letter is squarish.
It makes the font seem futuristic. That little touch makes
it look like something science fiction, almost like a *ahem*
space-like font in a space-themed game *cough*.
Sorry must have something in my throat... Wink

6. iso-8859-15: Swedish/finnish: ÅÄÖåäö

Woo!
Wait, do these include Polish too? Like, ęóąśłżźćń and all that?
Nice font, sev! I think it maches the game's theme really good.

But yeah, support for polish characters would be cool too. As lots of folks from Poland play this game and we are sure to work on polish translation if we can (maybe even polish voices?), anyways...
