community feelings
hi hi!

this is to the awesome devs out there that have done alot of work for all of us.

while its been noted that xonotic is awesome in many respects , i have to report that im getting alot of complaints about weapon movements and movement in general.

ive explained to the people that its early days in the dev and all , and to hang in there for the good of the community (this they agree on guys)

alot of people are unhappy about how they feel they are losing our old game style and have been putting in the time to try and adjust to it
some servers have been trying to tweek the settings as well to try and find some sort of middle ground to it all , but it seems that they end up a bit frustrated with it all

please note that i have also been trying to adjust as well , and i find i like alot about the new game , but as you guys know i feel quite strongly about flying (rocket) , but tweeking cannot get anywhere near to what i loved , some find that weapon switching is slow , etc as well

again its early days , but i must honestly say that im feeling a bad vibe at this moment and i must put it out there to the community so im open and being truthfull about what im being told and what im experiencing.

i love u guys <3

i love this community and i wouldnt be so active if i didnt think this game and community were so awesome.

so dont be an emo nerd about this and remember that im just a plumber and im not very good at nerd stuff , but i do know and respect peoples thoughts.

this is to the devs and the community.

this game is open to anyone , and anyone should have a say.

awwwwwwwwww chooky <3<3<3

i agree this game is making alot of people unhappy with the changes, me too dislike the changes in how they slowed down game play Sad
BUT they have done alot of good things and made it look better.

the servey they made was a good idea because they can atleast please the majority now.

the main reason i play this game it the community mainly, there just so good. everyones willing to help people but im starting to see a fair bit of fighting going on over the changes and its sad to see Sad

over the 2 years ive played this game many things have changed and we have had to adjust.

i love you all

and chooky your a nerd, dont think your not Tongue

RE: community feelings
As with any change there will always be some who like it and some who don't. With early development releases, designed as a preview of the work in progress and a platform for testing, there will be far more people unhappy with the current state of the game simply because it has not been finished. Anyone saying "Xonotic is shit, Nexuiz was so much better" does not understand the concept of development and should play Nexuiz until Xonotic final release. Weapons and balance is something I expect will change constantly up until release (and beyond), so while everyone is entitled to their opinion, it would be more productive to get involved with real ideas about how to make Xonotic a balanced, competitive and fun game.

Also t.

RE: community feelings
You're actually pretty much out of luck. The reason is simple. Xonotic is not Nexuiz 3.0!

While a general idea is taken from Nexuiz, the majority of ppl behind Xonotic want to make it attractive to new player, reduce learning curve in many of gameplay aspects and reduce unbalance between veteran players and average players. This is atleast how I understand the motivation behind all the gameplay changes.

While rocket flying is a lot harder now, gamemodes which promoted that idea (like CTF) will finally require teamplay to capture (+1 for that).

RE: community feelings
I myself sticked to playing Nexuiz too, at first, because I thought the gameplay was not good. But then the laser got an update on its push force again and I started to learn the new physics. For some while I played both Nexuiz and Xonotic and eventually found that Xonotic is more attractive after all. It's two months or so now that I last played Nexuiz...

Having learnt the basics of movement and to use the new weapons effectively, Xonotic seems to me way more balanced already now than Nexuiz ever was. I actually found myself configuring binds for crylink and hagar, weapons I never used on purpose in Nexuiz. I feel well equipped with pretty much any pickup weapon (except for the mg perhaps, but I NEVER liked the mg so never mind that). I am comfortable with the movement. I enjoy doing trickjumps. I am having fun all along.

Making the gap between skill levels narrower is a good thing to do as well, since it enables MORE players to have MORE interesting games with each other. I'd also like to point out that the narrowing of the gap is not like PCL vs Newbie would turn out 20:19 now, but that the balancing effect is really quite moderate.

So my bottom line is that if you change the game, then people will need to adapt to the changes. Adapting is painful, it means learning, most people don't want to do that and prefer to stick to what they know. OF COURSE people will complain.

But if you don't change the game, there'd be no point in working on it. You need to be open for changes in order to experience improvements. 1.0 is still a long way to go and if you participate NOW there are chances you can help making the result turn out better.

I love the direction Xonotic is going.

Is this something Xonotic should really be aiming for? After all Xonotic is not an AAA gaming title and really serves a niche community of gamers. I wholly disagree with the statement "Xonotic is not Nexuiz 3.0" because it has the same code, same community, same image and very similar gameplay. So far the only place Xonotic differs from Nexuiz in is name.

Hmm, I was going to say how a lot of people had their high expectations dashed when the 0.1 alpha came out, but then I realised not only that the release was indeed an alpha but that it was also something that the community wanted to show off Xonotic (at least afaict). There's a lot of things to fix before Xonotic 1.0 comes out, but balance and physics is probably the most important because it's what will differentiate it from Nexuiz, and without good balance/physics most current Nexuiz players will be reluctant to get behind Xonotic.

If you look closely at all the projects around Xonotic, you'll see that it involves like 10x more ppl than Nexuiz ever did. Comparing to other opensource free project without sponsorship, Xonotic can be called AAA production (not that I ever agreed with AAA term invented by marketing gurus to suggest a game is better than others and production cost where giant...)

There is soo many differences between Nexuiz and Xonotic, that I won't even try to list them. So if you don't see them, it's either you didn't play it or you just like to complain for no reasons.

RE: community feelings
No offense, but why don't "those people who don't like it" move their ass to this forum and post constructive critique instead of saying "Lulz dis game iz shitz". Or the can try the new survery. I guess they tried the game for ~10 Minutes. Halogene made a nice point - you need to practise it first and get into this _new_ game. I know that people thought Xonotic will be quite similar to Nexuiz (-> cause of "fork of Nexuiz"), but I agree with atheros here. Xonotic is a great chance now to e.g. fix the weapon balance and get a good balance until 1.0 where almost everyone agrees with.
In every (someone correct me if not, but almost every Tongue) new version in Nexuiz we got changes in physics and balance, where a lot of people complained. But most of them still continued playing. I don't really want to see that again, I want a nice balance (and player base) already at 1.0 .

RE: community feelings
dear uncle mirio Smile

u are right my funky friend , and so is athey (new nick name atheros Tongue )

but my thoughts on this is (and the opinion of others) is that some do make comments here , there and everywhere , but it seems to fall on deaf nerd ears (grommets?)

i know for a fact , when i first came onto the scene it took me a year to gain some sort of voice with the rest of the world , then the game did a spoon or a knife thingo and my crappy music was some how making an impact with u guys (WTF ARE U GUYS ON???) and now it seems im somebody for some reason....

the point is people who are active in this game , but not involved in the community , but have been playing for a long time are making alot of comments that i have witnessed in game , or chat , mumble , pornhub (ohshi!) and are taken as some kinda lamo comment.

but as lame as it seems guys , they are still comments that need to be considered.

but yer comments like "THIS GAME IS SHIT" are very hurtfull to the devs and to me , but i still have a little think about why they would say that.

anyway i shall say this guys,

dont copy nexuiz , but copy its soul

0-o so heavy mannnnn Tongue

oh and it is the same game , its just different.

if a nerd fell in tha woods.........

RE: community feelings
Pretty much what all that atheros said.

No game you're going to try is going to feel "better" to you than a game you're playing 20 hours a week for the past 2 years, it'll feel different and you'll miss things and features that you're used to. Xonotic is like any other new game you'd hear about and might want to give it a try, except people have misconceptions about it being an upgrade to Nexuiz and are let down because it's too different. It's a new game. Xonotic is still early in development and is still using a lot of stuff from Nexuiz because it's simply easier than to start from scratch.

I don't know if you ever met players coming from other games that were giving Nexuiz a try and thought it was crap compared to the game they're coming from (Q3, UT, whatever), I'm sure you found that annoying, right? Well this is the same thing happening here. If you're just going to suggest that it should be like nexuiz, what is the point? Nexuiz is still there. You're not going connecting to a Quakelive server and telling people "well, the physics are dumb, they should be like Nexuiz and it needs a laser", are you? No, you either play long enough to get used to it or you decide for yourself if you like it or not. You don't play a new game 10 minutes and expect to be perfectly at ease with everything about it.

Also, Xonotic is only at 0.1, of course it's buggy and has issues. That's why they're asking for feedback.

RE: community feelings
nifrek did a good job summarizing things. This thread is on the border of being flamebait. No one is trying to ruin your past experience. Xonotic has evolved on a new path but I certainly don't feel it's gone backwards from Nexuiz. Playing it at first, there is a difference but going back to Nexuiz after a while, and you'll feel a similar difference but that's not necessarily bad, it's different and unusually.

The movement in Xonotic took me a second but just as with Nexuiz, I grew to understand the beauty of the movement and how to get the most out of it. I cannot say any other game makes me feel the same way as Xonotic's physics, they are unique and very fun.

This is just the beginning, the physics and the balance are still being fine-tuned.

Turn towards a new friend and help make this game your new favorite past time.

Yeah, by AAA I meant $$$/games where the objective is to get players rather than have fun. A bit off topic, but ranking systems achieve this addiction causing-fun squashing balance nicely Wink

However, the FACT of the matter is there is a whole lot different in Xonotic than the name. This Xonotic 0.1preview release post will get you up to speed on _some_ of the differences.

You could say: Xonotic is Nexuiz 3.0. Nexuiz 3.0 was going to be a big rethink of everything anyway too, so...

Ps. Hope the majority can be made happy with the results from the survey. I'm no longer in charge for the balance, because I'll be too busy in the following months. Maybe that means that things will turn for the better Big Grin

Well it's already very good, there isn't huge changes that need to be made just in my opinion anyway but yea, MG is not very good though, only weapon I do not use as I just find the primary just as bad as it was in nexuiz!

Overall things are going in the right direction and this is good to see, already great to see how well the game is at, at only 0.1!

Well besides fine tuning the balance is quite close to being perfect, probably MG, Crylink and Sinper will need some more work IMO. Xonotic is on it's way to becoming a great game, that is unless we now start doing radical changes or go back to nexuiz Big Grin

MG could use some work, Crylink is way better than in Nexuiz 2.5.2, and all that's left to do to Sniper Rifle is switch to tZork's!
Good Game.
