Xonotic works on Windows XP

#1
Information
Greetings!

While i was searching for quake alternatives last night i was surprised to see that the AFPS scene was still very alive. I stumbled upon xonotic and i decided to download it. However i was not very sure if the system requirements for the game was accurate (the download page said Windows 7 or newer).

Nevertheless i decided to still try to see if the game was going to run on winXP. Surprisingly it did.

Attached below are screenshots of me being able to get the game running on my laptop to prove that yes indeed, this game could run on XP.

It depends however. This is WinXP 32 bit, so only 32 bit xonotic executable can run. Not sure if it can run on the x64 edition as ive not tried that and its based more on Windows Server 2003.

Overall, i believe this game may entirely be functional on WinXP. I have not seen any issues with running it, i was only able to play single player and instant action matches as i cant always get the internet on this laptop, so i havent tested multiplayer functionality yet.

However no, i dont recommend you actually go out of your way to run this on a real Windows XP system just in case. i know the security risks related to it, youre using an OS who is legally old enough to drive and drink. So enthusiasts using WinXP like me relegate it to pure offline use. Its just a little discovery ive made that i wish to share with you people.

Maybe if there is a xonotic developer who could check into this. Big Grin

I discovered this a while ago myself. The 32-bit version runs and it seems to mostly work, but it's not really viable for actual play. On high (but not max, maybe 80% max) settings it seems like the OS can't handle it. The game runs out of memory within 10-15 minutes for me, playing offline with no mods or anything.

It is worth noting that the official Xonotic system requirements call for 4GB RAM minimum which is the maximum 32-bit XP supports. Furthermore a single program can only use 2GB RAM at once in 32-bit Windows, meaning half of their minimum. If the game is large address aware it may support 3GB as max, but that is still very low.

It is probable though that the game would work fine with 64-bit XP/Server 2003 given you can easily run with more RAM.
