In quakelive they nerfed every instanthit weapon with this patch in the past:
"Added HitCylinders – A cylindrical collision box is now used for weapon hit detection. The previous axis aligned cuboid hitbox is still used for player movement collision."
The problem with that is, that there are some models available which are bigger then the hitbox, so it looks like your shots went through. But I noticed that aiming in nexuiz and warsow (played it yesterday a bit) is way easier then in quakelive, even it is the slowest in terms of movement.
This suggestion is not that important as long as the beta is not available, but it might be interesting in the future, if instanthit weapons seem to be to dominant.
