Announcers

#1
There seems to be no thread about announcers, so I would like to open this thread about announcers for the game.
Xonotic will have a distance to Nexuiz so the announcers may change. But how will they be changed? Which announcers will still be there for us?

I think Ive read anywhere something about selctable announcers...maybe in the old Nexuiz roadmap? What about something like that? Smile

Which announcers do you all like? Do you have any suggestion for a new announcer? Any ideas, anything? Tongue

I like the current announcer voice. But more consistent, I should say. Consistent effects applied to the voice.

I have Adobe Audition 3. If there is a need for the project to have it's own voices just give me the word.

The current theme is good, no need to change.

The currrent voicepack is good (even very good) but inconsistent - different voices, different effects.

Would be nice to make them match each other. Also would be nice if some alternative voicepacks would be available. I might record some weird announcers - here is an example:

http://www.last.fm/music/unfa/Jooze/ - track #9: "Jooze", from the beginning (that's me)

Official voice pack must all be the same person with same effects. Then, officially sponsored translated voice packs with consistent actors and effects. Finally, community released unregulated voice packs.

Why not make additional (alternative) official (in English) voicepacks once we have the basic one done?

We'd also need a menu option for selecting a voicepack.

We could create a special session in Ardour as a template for this job. It would contain tracks with effects suitable for different purposes.

A voicepack actually could be done probably, maybe even could be supported natively without having to replace it manually. (Select it from a menu, I mean)

But well, first we actually need the sounds Tongue

http://git.xonotic.org/?p=xonotic/xonoti...19;hb=HEAD

That is the list of announcer sounds we currently have - There are EVEN MORE which I would prefer, especially game mode specific ones for e.g. freezetag or assault. But in the least, this is a start. Please, if someone can actually work on these and produce good quality announcements: Say so on the thread, and keep us posted for updates?

If someone can commit to doing the voices, i'll come back later and add some new announcement ideas if I can. Everyone else: Feel free to suggest announcements too, imo the more the merrier.

Edit: Another thing to add: If you do voices, please also include all the source for it too. Yes, I mean everything. It's not necessary, but it helps very much -- especially if we have the raw sound files for the voice recording itself.

Suggestion: Xonotic has futuristic and space-like theme. Could we add some kind of voice clips with metallic/robotic announcer? These kind of clips is often used in other games.

For example...

Portal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3k8HWv3u2IM
Starcraft II ( those "Nuclear launch detected" and "Our allies are being attacked"): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOlXyQ6qTxI

If you think these kind of clips would fit in Xonotic, I could look into making them. Or ask someone else to use his/her voice, and I just make the final editing.

Edit: These voices would be best on situations like "5 minutes remaining", "Strength gained", "The enemy has your flag" and so on. These "Rage", "Amazing", "Mayhem!" and others maybe don't fit in these kind of voice.

Just a trial. AM pitchshifter gives it both low voice and a robotic feel.

Nice, your accent shines through some times though Tongue

But seriously: Cool -- Again: Remember to provide both raw audio too -- Especially for trials. I want to hear the difference and try and see if it's possible to improve it in some way
