[DM] Rankin

Hello,

This is a port of the map "DM-Rankin" from Unreal Tournament 2004 to Xonotic.

No conversion tools were used, but this port is based on another port of DM-Rankin for Unreal Tournament 1999: https://unrealarchive.org/unreal-tournam...61ec4.html
The mapping was done with UnrealEd and NetRadiant running side by side, so the geometry is largely similar between the UT99 map and the resulting Xonotic map. However, the two maps aren't identical, as the Xonotic port is more complete and fixes certain inconsistencies. Some map details have also been made by taking screenshots in UT2004 then recreating the brushwork as best as possible.

Of course, the map has been adapted to Xonotic's gameplay (dodge ramps have been replaced by ramp jumps, for example). The items distribution is mostly similar to that of the UT2004 map, but I replaced the 50 armor with a 100 Mega Health pickup.

Looks good so far. But in terms of colors there's something missing... like pipies of glowing slime. Slimefalls, Glowy slime illuminating the wall on the sides of a hallway. Some contrast.
Also those lamps some look like they could have a more orange-ish tint. Then purple or cyan glowing slime/lava could be good

Thanks _para (aka SirRanjid on Discord) for your feedback! I didn't make all the changes you suggested, in order to keep the original look and feel of this map, but I still borrowed some of your ideas and from a lighting point of view the map should look a bit better now.
Also thanks to all the players who have tested the map so far.

I updated the first post with a new release: Rankin_xon_v2.

Changelog:
  • Replaced the 50 armor with a Mega Health + other small item changes.
  • Added 45° slopes in the vents to guide players (as well as markers on the floor below the vents for blaster jumps).
  • Tweaked some lights, especially the color of the neon and downstairs hallway lights.
  • Added some visual details also present in the original UT2004 map + misc small cosmetic changes.
  • Added more clips for smoother movement.
  • Fixed misaligned textures on some pipes.
  • Brush cleanups.
  • Improved the bot waypoints (bots can pass through air vents now).

Thanks to everyone who gave me feedback!

Yes, this map has quite long lines of sight, which makes it a Vortex heaven in Clan Arena... but there's nothing I can do here without altering the map to the point where it wouldn't be Rankin anymore ^^"
This seems inherent to UT map ports, since Deck16 and Old Steel Complex (which are UT maps ported to Xonotic) are also Vortex heavens.
I've made a few changes that should make the map more balanced in DM or TDM, though.

I updated the first post with a final release, Rankin_xon_v3.

Changelog:
  • Added 2 x 50 armors (near the Hagars) for better item balance + other minor item adjustments.
  • Improved the contrast by reducing the floodlight intensity from 16 to 6 + other light tweaks.
  • Added more clips for smoother movement around the map.
  • Minor brush cleanups.

Maybe make an altered version that is not rankin anymore but improves stuff you think the map could benefit from. It could run parallel and be updated based on feedback and feeling.
My idea would be some more covers.
