Heads up for OSX Mountain Lion users

A couple of days ago Apple has presented their latest version of Mac OS X: Mountain Lion (10.8). This latest release adds quite a few security measures, which can affect the use of Xonotic. In this post I'd like to address these issue and how they can easily be solved.

For users downloading a fresh copy of Xonotic from our website, they will get an error when trying to start the game for the first time. The error looks like this:

This is the new Gatekeeper verifying downloads when starting them for the <strong>first time</strong>. The simple solution is to right-click the Xonotic application, and select 'Open' - you will now be presented with a window where you can choose to specifically trust the Xonotic application (yes, you can trust us ;-). After doing this once, you can simply start the application the next time by clicking it directly.

The alternative is to disable Gatekeeper altogether, which can be done under the Privacy &amp; Security tab in the System Settings. We however do not encourage you to do this, as the workaround to whitelist specific applications is pretty easy.

For users running from git, we are still working out the kinks in order to be able to properly download and compile in Mountain Lion. Please get in touch with us on IRC if you have specific issue and we can look into it.

I knew this day would come, in next release I think Apple will completly lock out apps which isen't in the App Store. I feel sad for all OS X users!

theShadow mentioned on IRC that it might as well be a consequence of the recent shattering of the "Mac OS is a secure platform" popular myth with the Mac Defender trojan. Seems much more plausible to me than just app store shenanigans.

Of course, Apple want to promote their app store philosophy. But that might not be the main motive behind this Gatekeeper feature.

That's probably also a reason, I know some secrets though, got a friend working on Apple.

Well, some of the stuff/rumors/secrets I've heard is not from my friend, I watched a shshow(LAS) which one of the hosts were developing for OS X and iPhone, and I've heard some stuff from him which are not secrets more of rumors. But I'm still pretty sure I know that Apple gonna do some vad stuff for the devs developing apps outside the App Store.

Last I checked, OS X was actually the least secure of the major three platforms, though I haven't been paying too much attention to operating system security lately. If I remember correctly though, it was always the first to be cracked in the pwn2own hacking contests.

No piece of software is 100% secure, it can in one way or another be cracked. Linux is to my knowledge a more secured family of systems mostly because of how varied it is and because of how much more development it sees than other systems, however there's still a possibility that we'll see viruses for systems such as Ubuntu (or any other distro for that matter) pop up as it becomes more popular. One major thing that I know of plagued OS X is that a TON of it's components that were derived from open source software were terribly dated.

Hah, wow, that's great. So the layout applied is based off the post id and not the thread id. Fun.
