In my opinion everything is OK with Minielectric. Sounds fine.

Hello folks,
I have small question for the staff that's working on Xonotic, though I might ask it in a complicated way as I'm not sure how to ask it
Do you guys accept work/stuff from other people outside of the team to implement in the game? And I'm especially talking about music, because that's my specialization. I'm already working on something that'll probably sound sick while playing Xonotic
If you guys don't like the "implement" idea, I was wondering if it would be possible to include custom songs for custom made maps. If that's the case, I can produce some music for maps that are not included within the game, and make some sort of small database of them for others to use in their custom maps.
Here's a preview of the (very unfinished) track, I called it X-force (duh.. Xonotic ): http://soundcloud.com/deshaadman/concept...ce-work-in
Especially notice the drum rythms, I've put work in those
Overall balance, mastering and composition is still really basic atm (No limiting yet either), I need to put work in that, everything can change.. a lot. Any feedback about the track/question is really appreciated!

Music is always welcome! Check the Xonotic - Development section, there are a few music threads on the first page.

This project LIVES from contributions of its community. So yes, if you would like to make a tune for Xonotic, go ahead! Just note two things:
1)if you intend it to be included into official Xonotic, make sure you can release it under GPLv2. That would require you to release the sources and to be entitled to do so (if I am not mistaken that would for example exclude usage of samples that were released under Creative Commons license).
2) be patient but persistant about developer feedback. It can take AGES before a tune gets included.
I'm looking forward to what you are working on!

Thank you Halogene! I'll search for some more info about the GPLv2 thing, but the sources thing.. does that mean I have to include the entire set? Because it was made in Ableton Live.
EDIT: Okay, I looked up some info, but I'm confused now. Does GPLv2 also apply on music? Because I only found things about programs. If so, this means I would need to show the Live Set and the samples (mostly the drum instuments, snare, kick), right?

It does apply to music, although the terms leave some wiggle room for interpretation. The Xonotic team's interpretation can be read here: http://dev.xonotic.org/projects/xonotic/...egal#Audio
The samples must have Terms of Use and licensing compatible with GPLv2 distribution.

Thank you Mr. Bougo, this cleared up things a lot

Oh strange, I always thought that using CC-BY licensed samples that you downloaded for example from "www.freesound.org" is not acceptable as you would redistribute them when disclosing the source of your project and they would be subject to the GPLv2 then which does not comply with CC-BY...
This licensing stuff is really confusing.

Eh, right. What's up with that... Are you sure CC-BY isn't GPLv2 compatible?

Well, this is one of the links that I found on the subject: http://www.diffen.com/difference/Creativ...nse_vs_GPL.
Several search hits state that the Free Software Foundation holds the GPLv2 as incompatible with the Creative Commons license. But I'm no expert on this...
Anyhow if the sample is part of a software bundle or an effect bundle then it should not be a problem as you could just release the source where the midi score contains the INFO on what sample to be played, you don't need to release the sample with it afaik.
|
|
I understand why CC-BY-SA would be incompatible, but CC-BY?
And no, that does not work, Halogene. It has to be GPL-compatible. If the sources are in violation, then so is the compiled product. Since the final track is bundled, it has to be GPL-compliant.
|
|
Well no, the source would be the project file, you don't have to distribute the samples of the software with the project file (which are NOT freely distributable in almost all cases, as they are part of what you pay for when purchasing the software). As far as I am informed it is ok to just release the project file as source that contains the midi score and the information what sample is to be used, so any other person can create derivative works provided he has the same tools (that are available on the market).

You have a good point there with the purchase issue. For example, what if somebody would have bought his samples? He may not freely distribute them then, or he would violate copyright terms. I'm also just a noob on this area, might be a good thing to start looking into this kinda stuff for me

Releasing the samples together with the source would probably violate licenses if those samples itself were not released under a GPL-compatible license. But releasing the project file without the samples but all the relevant midi information would still enable anyone that purchases the tools to modify the work, and therefore would be sufficient for the GPL I think (you don't have to release the tools together with the source, otherwise you'd have to provide a computer and a power plant together with the source, too).
This is a bit tricky with samples downloaded from some website, as those may not be available to everybody (for example if the uploading user deletes them afterwards). But I am not sure, if being part of a commercially available product relieves you from the obligation to provide the sample with the source, it seems to make little sense to me.
|
|
Hm, right. I seem to have got this wrong.
But said samples have licensing terms too. Some might be reserved for personal use.
|
|
Yes but I figure once you are not required to release the samples itself with the source, the sample's license is irrelevant as long as you create a derivative work from it?
That's why I don't use prefab loops, those will be included as audio tracks in the project file which would violate the relevant license.
|
|
If the samples are reserved for personal use, you can't distribute works including them, full stop. Trial versions of some software come with such terms I think?

I pressed some random buttons and this song just happened: http://fruitiex.dyndns.org/music/stripes.mp3 SC: http://soundcloud.com/rasmus-eskola/stripes
Very random, what a mess
Proof: http://fruitiex.dyndns.org/music/stripes.png
Actually the way I made this tune is really fun! If you know ableton, I made a bunch of clips (which are just looped patterns, basically), containing somewhat randomly timed hits of notes with the same pitch. Now every *separate* clip had these notes pitched differently, all within a musical scale of course so it won't sound completely random and horrible . Now on separate tracks, I would time the notes differently, and alter pitch slighlty or even a whole octave up/down.
Then it's just a 3 minute jam session with these clips, launching them in a random order on a MIDI controller (the top most row named "Group 1" is the result of that "jam", in fact) => result is of course a big mess. However some bits sounded quite good, so I took those, looped them, arranged the loops and made minor edits to them. Now do the same thing for drums, throw in some effects and mastering, and there's the tune.
Named stripes for obvious reasons. Enjoy!

End result of something I had been working on for Xonotic
http://soundcloud.com/deshaadman/x-force...sion-track
Called it X-force (X for Xonotic ). Spent a good while on the drums/percussion. The track is 2:53 minutes and loops almost unnoticably, file size is just 2.68 Mb. It was made in Ableton Live, and then converted to .ogg with Adobe Audition 3.
I also playtested it in Solarium by replacing traveler.ogg in the music pk3. Then I adjusted the mastering untill it was good enough for an ingame track. After that it still sounded a little bit too loud, so I reduced the overall volume by 1 dB, I hope that was enough to do the trick.
The track is literally made from scratch (no single preset). Style is pretty much mixed, with some breakbeat drums and some nice rythmic synths, but also with some softer parts. Might be nice for some kind of space map, or something big!
I tried to make something that fits Xonotic, I hope it worked out well, that's to be decided by the rest
Enjoy and leave some feedback

This ain't bad for some random stuff! My only complaint would be that it might be a little bit distracting ingame, maybe you should playtest it and see if that's the case

Wow Archer, that's an epic track and I think the style fits Xonotic perfectly! Hope that can be included with the game

Me too. The only criticism I have is that the pace changes a little too much. I think the faster more energetic parts should be longer.

I'll see what I can do about that, maybe I can sort of stretch everything to make the entire track longer, and to soften the pace

A track I've been working on lately.
I don't have much time to make noise lately.
Whatdaya think of this?
