Map prop modelers wanted!

#1
Hey there,

Sending out a notice for anyone with any modeling skills out there that Xonotic could use some map props! Nothing specific, just any details that you could imagine finding in a future (optionally destroyed!) space ship/space base or whatever: boxes, debris (for destroyed parts), pipes, vents, rails, supports, pillars, tables (with stuff on it), chairs, shelves (with stuff on it), futuristic machines, doors, lights, cable supports, server racks (?!? lol) or whatever your imagination can come up with Big Grin. Maybe with several variations of a prop too, if you really feel inspired.

Anything like this would dramatically help mappers when adding details to their maps, since first of all creating details in radiant that look even remotely good is very hard and time consuming, second placing/copying these details is quite terrible (have to select all parts separate, maybe use func_groups or whatever), third if each mapper has to create their own props (with radiant, since some (me included) can't rly model) the resulting game will feel VERY inconsistent, with ugly details etc. (see Nexuiz). If we instead had a bunch of good props, enough of them to allow variation of course, things would be different. Until then boring, ugly, blocky, unrealistic brush details will rule the Xonotic world.

Plus points for using own textures, would further reduce over-usage of the already quite limited trak/exx texturesets.

If these models exists, are GPL, and of high quality they would be most helpful. I would really like a warning light the work with dynamic lighting Smile Smile I tried doing this in netradient but failed

Fruitiex, do you folks mind using GPL content made for / used in other Free games, like Vega Strike?

Stickied. I'll alert theShadow of this thread and have him put up some screenies of various models that could be used.

I think that's perfectly fine Smile

Just post links here, I will start gathering stuff that I find worthy/fitting into a new branch.

If your not going to ship your map whit xonotic you could consider to release it under the Creative Commons licenses. That will enable you to use models from blendswap.com (boxes, rustic utility warzone spaceship).
Is it possible to duel licenses a model under the CC and GPL? Or would that be useless?

If I understand correctly, certain CC licenses are GPL compatible (CC-BY?), but don't take my word on that...

Nope, I'm not trying to collect models for any particular map here, but instead a bunch of props that get shipped with Xonotic so that future mappers can use them easily. So CC is a no-go.

You can put your own work under any license(s) you want, notice the "s". Smile
However only GPL models can be accepted into Xonotic. (it doesn't matter if the same model has also been released under the terms of CC, MIT, Apache license, BSD or whatever)

Wow, cool stuff Big Grin

As a mapper, here's my first request: a standing lamp model, something like this:

These are brushwork btw... this is the best you can get from that...

I don't know if shipping them with xonotic is a good idea, no need to add more weight to the package.

They are usually very lightweight. Possibly 100 props would add 10 mb or so to the package. Given all the advantages, it's worth it.

Xonotic is a GPL project, so AFAIK no.

The problem is that far from everyone using xonotic will use these props, as mappers constitute a very small portion of the community. Those that are mappers will likely look on the website for more information and so on, and find the props.

Umm... I like to get all tools in one download. I'd feel the same with map props.
However, this thread is not about adding the props to the main download package, it's about a prop database in general. Don't derail the thread pls.

Nice! It has some overlap on the UV map though, can see black pixels at the edges of some red faces... Also could you export to md3 as well next time, and I'd wish props could have the proper real-life scale too. (one blender unit corresponds to one quake unit which in turn corresponds to one inch). Also, a higher quality version is accepted too (not as high as the reference one in the blend file, thats too much). The game can switch between them dynamically as you walk closer/further away. Name them blabla.md3 and blabla_lod1.md3, blabla_lod2.md3 etc for more levels of detail (1 is already enough)

Adding this.

Fruitie, I noticed that Cuinnton posted some pictures of things as a reference - does this help? Are you able to better model things if you have multiple pictures of an object? If so, and you are looking for more photography of things, then I can definitely help with that (I have a digital SLR w/ lots of lenses). I didn't think that stuff was usable for modeling, but I know next to nothing about it.

I fixed the UV layout, made a higher quality version and made the models 20 blender units high.
But I don't know how to export to md3, I found a script, but it made 1 400kb file... presumably whit all 3 models. (the script doesn't give a dialog screen)
I haven't found any tutorial on the wiki how to do this.

Okay, great (somewhere I can be useful)! Tell me what you are looking for and I can go hunting. Also what format do you like? Not everyone likes the baggage that can come with pictures in RAW format.

I feel useless, so here we are:
I contacted to get the authors' contact info, but it's a submission-based website, there are many contributors, it may take a while.

The submit form asks to provide licensing info inside the .blend itself «In an open text window», but I'm not used to Blender, maybe you could check. And btw, I fear they prefer CC-based licenses...

I did a few sets of asteroid models with diffuse, specular (gloss) and normal textures, mostly intended for real-time use. GPL licensed, might be good for space maps--

http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/forums...=4&t=13343

I may update them with refinements in the near future, so you might not want to add them to the repo just yet. Plus all the large source textures in the package makes it hefty.

Good work! I wonder if these can be incorporated into the new evilspace - the earth in the skybox is way too distracting. These fit the theme but don't take away from the map!

No idea how to do that, but I can re-export the models in whatever format is available as a blender export script (and at whatever scale you want, in units).
