minideck_v4r2 preview / call for suggestions

#1
Hi,

i decided to use the lazy days between christmas and new year to continue working on minideck. Here's a preview version. This version still has bugs and issues to work on. But it already sports the nice supports from Morphed Big Grin

In this last screeny you see a walkway for which i have of yet no really good idea. If you have a suggestion, please let me know..

I've always liked minideck. But! One thing that always irks me is the ramps/bridges in the second screenshot that go from one side of the map to the other. They are waaaaayyy too thin. Either you should thicken them up or add some support beams along the length of them or something.

edit: Oh also the wall to the right in screenshot 3 looks kinda bare. There seem to be others like that as well that could do with windows/blood stains/alcoves/pipes/grates or something. I know this is a pain since a good bit of the map is matrix rather than brush.

Ok, since you are the second person telling me they are too thin, i will fiddle with the bridges a bit. I kinda like their thinness.. But i'll see if i can make them e.g. twice as thick..
And yeah, these walls are really my waterloo with this map.. How to make them more interesting?

you could also do both, where they are thick at the ends and taper in the middle

something like that (with a greater angle at the transitions)

Looks nice from the screenshots but the coloring is still too ... colorful. If you could make areas more tonal, that would improve the visuals a lot. Like having an area which is more reddish (with reddish light, textures...) and some areas which are more greenish - as opposed to areas that are partly greenish and partly reddish while having dominating elements that are bright GREEN and bright RED. And then there is plain brown... Those color contrasts make it look a bit toy-like, which doesn't quite fit the overall design of the map imho. But it's already better since you took out the bright blue Big Grin Maybe just tweak the coloring a bit so you don't mix too "pure" colors.

Apart from the coloring, good work from what I see on the screenshots. Personally I like thin bridges due to the fact that you can deal reasonable damage through the walls. Maybe make them partly transparent (some metal grid or even glass?)? You could have thicker parts on the edges and have the inner part in glass or a metal grid, so you can see where someone is moving from below. That would potentially add to the gameplay I believe. Plus it would make sense statically.

Edit: Oh, that's what theShadow suggested already.

Oh, and this map just needs some ramps for doing trick jumps. Just think about where you might want to go by lasering yourself up and place a small ramp there so that you need some speed but can make it without laser.

Just played it, seems a LOT darker in-game that the pics. Little to dark for my taste. Good job on the map though, hydraulics are usable as ramps Big Grin

Shouldn't this be in the 'Map release' section?

I fiddled a bit with the colors after helpful comments by morphed, kyre and Xard on IRC. Still some kinks to fix, but getting there..

EDIT: pk3 updated with some fixed texture alignment..

Needs some texture fixup. Will upload newest version in the next few hours..

It's still work in progress.. So these are preview releases for testing and giving recommendations/suggestions..

Love that second last screenshot with the pipes infront of the grating then the sky seen through it. Very very cool.
