How do I get started with Darkplaces Development?

So, I'm very new to Quake modding and Xonotic modding. My goal is to make a standalone game with Darkplaces like Xonotic. In order to achieve that goal I figure I'll need to work with the engine more. So... How do I get started? What resources do I need?

Well the easiest thing would be forking Xonotic. Darkplaces games are written in QuakeC while Darkplaces itself is written in C.
