Oh boy, the scrolling shooter is one of the most popular genres (well, at least it was), it's strange that you didn't find anything, but here are some titles old & new (not all vertical, but it's pretty much the same):
Tyrian, Flying Tigers, Ravaged, Vanguard Ace, Nebula Fighter, Astro Menace, Raptor, The Reap, Solaris 104, Jamestown, Irukandji, Gundemonium, eXceed, Razor, Really Big Sky, Super Amazing Wagon Adventure, Hydorah, Jets'n Guns...
and probably thousands more :-).

The genre is loaded with classics. Some of the must plays include Silpheed (Sega CD version specifically), Radiant Silvergun, Ikaruga, Tyrian 2000, Raptor: Call of the Shadows, Truxton, Vanguard (which was a mix of side scrolling and vertical scrolling released in arcades and on the Atari 2600 and 5200), Silpheed: The Lost Planet, Vanguard Ace (not to be confused with the previously mentioned Vanguard), Laser Age (technically not a scroller as it uses static backgrounds, but it still plays like one), Galaxian, Galaga, and Space Invaders.

I haven't played those unfortunately, but judging by the screenshots you seem to want a non bullet hell shooter.

From the titles that I mentioned you should try Astro Menace (free) and Jets'n Guns (paid) for starters.

Nebula Fighter is a bit tricky to obtain (track down the developer and ask about it - he gives it away for free nowadays ;-) ) but it's also a lot of fun.

Tyrian 2000/OpenTyrian is also great and available for free.

The thing I really don't like about Space Shooters is that they are so moronic and simple. They may look good visually but come on...

far from moronic and simple, you need SKILLS to just survive let alone grapple with the deep scoring systems that games like ikaruga and radiantsilvergun have

Alright, let me put it this way:

It's probably just me being biased/snobby, but they're not really my cup of tea. Undecided

I played some Xenon http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCAUTrgso8k and raptor http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uYst7084Pk when I was young but in the recent years the only game similar to this is Jets n Guns, but its not vertical and horizontal

woa ... that ones a gamecube game ... must get ... :3

anywyas ... its gona be a bit before I can try the dos ones ... my linux dos box has no sound due to pulse audto being iteslf ... and my windows boot dosbox has no sound because its ... um .. windows ...
I plan on updating to mint 13 soon though ...

anyways ... I do realize that some vertical shooters can get boring because over a while you become massively overpowered ....

anyways anyways ... some features im working on for mine ...
[*] branching level structure ... you can pick what level to go to ... if you find one too hard ... go back to the map and do a different one first

[*] no little helper things that shoot for you ... no sidefire ... or back fire ... those make it too easy

[*] customize-able weapon system ... if possible ... there should be 175,616 different weapons ...

[*] semi randomness ... some level elements will be random (like enemies and stuff ) ... to make every play though different ...

[*] a story line ....

[*] graphics will be sprites rendered from blender ... language is processing ... java based ...

hmm...
1. sounds like Scoregasm, neat idea
2. aw, I actually like those
3. hmm... could be cool
4. random FTW!
5. yeah, those are always nice to have
6. as long as you will have those sprites rendered from multiple angles in order to fake some animations it's probably gonna work out fine

SCOREGASM!

Seriously though, whenever I'm tasked with coming up with a team name, I always choose 'Multiple Scoregasms'. Big Grin

Scoregasm is actually a game http://www.scoregasm-game.com/ (also on steam and desura) - it's an arena space shooter (like Asteroids), quite fun. One of it's features is the branching campaign.

yes there will be animations ...
although I need to figure out how to optimize them ... right now 50 enemies brings it down to 3 fps D: ...

another thing I forgot about ... there will be a dip feature ... where the player can dive under an object for a second ... or dive over ...

Sounds cool. I'd always recommend doing something original in a genre that is filled to the brim with recycled ideas.

Oh and how about chromiumBSU? Tongue
