Adapting nexuiz map "outofthisworld" to Xonotic

Hi there,

About a month ago i created this map for nexuiz CTF, DM, TDM and KH

it was my 3rd map so it has some bugs and things that need to be improved, now i've been wondering:

Is it a good idea to adapt this map for Xonotic?

If so i will:
-change some textures to something created by me or by a xonotic contributor, mostly to get rid of the MikeeUSA textures.

-fix the textures folder to match with the "Official Shader/Texture Naming Convention"

-fix the known bugs that are: 2 items overlapped inside the building, you can get stuck in the pillars, to reach the flags you should use the laser.

-improve some stuff like: Music, items placement, the sculpture at the top of the buildings (i need help with this one), the Olympic flame (i need help with this one too).


Please tell me if you would like to see this map adapted to Xonotic and if so how can i improve to something better.

A couple of points I think would make the map better:

- The buildings: you should have more detail and textural variation.
- http://pics.nexuizninjaz.com/images/o13o...qsrelz.jpg: are those pink things both shields? Personally, I don't think it's a good idea to have powerups really close together.
- The ground: it'd be nice if you could make some more "organic" looking terrain Smile

I haven't tested the map itself, but I'm guessing it's going to get a lot of camping because of the direct line of sight between the two bases.

Yeah, i know, i mean when i created it i was new in the mapping stuff.

I will add more details, better structures (the buildings are very simple), i will add something to avoid the camping, probably a wall, if anyone has ideas i would be glad to listen.

Uhh... Why? Do you afraid he'll suddenly change license or something?

I just know that he is not "loved" by the community, his maps were banned from the servers because he was anti-feminist and.... well i don't want problems with that.

As long as you don't use any of the propaganda textures there will not be any problem. Mikee's textures are GPL and if this map will be licensed as such, nobody will have a case anyway. So: use everything that is allowed that you want. However, if you would like the map to be included in the game by default, the textures do need to reach a certain level of quality, so that should be an additional thing to look out for then.

To be honest: I would suggest you to build a new map rather than converting this one to xonotic. As mentioned above Xonotic-maps should provide more detail. Your map-layout so far is mainly two big squares in space with 2 greek-architectural-styled bases. Adding enough detail to make your map visually interesting will drop the framerates a LOT because of the open approach you used (you can nearly see the whole map from the top of each building). You also mentioned that this is your 3rd map and it is really well done for a 3rd map. But trust me, you will improve faster if you try to build new layouts and styles rather then converting old stuff.
Your map is fine, but to be realistic: it's not a keeper. Player's are more likely to play "facing worlds" over and over again, cause it's a classic, looks better and the main gameplay element (two facing bases with a lot of space inbetween) is the same.

If you just add a wall, it'll be just like greatwall. If you don't, it'll be just like facing worlds. I agree with Strahlemann, just scrap it and build a masterpiece. =D
