[SOLVED] How-TO get started?

total newbie here...

not a huge gamer, but xonotic looked like fun.

I don't find any significant info on how to set up xonotic so I can just play local games against the computer. nor much else on how to set up from scratch either. am I missing something?

I'm on Linux (Centos 5.6 - 32 bit), AMD Phenom II X2, 4 gigs RAM, Nividia 9800GT.

to be specific, whenever I start up the game, I get some fast-moving graphics followed by returning to the screen I had before I started xonotic. there are a lot of diagnostics in the terminal window, but it ends with:

This bug is indeed not known yet. Your system should be fine.

Can you try running it in gdb, and do a backtrace?

(Quick usage:

gdb ./xonotic-linux64-glx
(gdb) run
then it'll crash
(gdb) bt full
...
(gdb) quit

and post the bt full output here

Also, can you try running it with the option -developer to see if you get any extra output, and post the IP address you had when getting the error? I suspect the code gets a weird HTTP error and cannot handle it properly.

when I run

the game doesn't die--well, maybe it does, but: I get a screen with some instructions on it and seem to be stuck there. it's in fullscreen mode, so I can't see what has happened in the terminal I ran it from. How can I run it in windowed mode?

You're doing it wrong Tongue You have to run the shellscript, that'll decide if you have 32 or 64 bit system, and sets the correct paths too.

yeah, I know about the shellscript. but the other poster asked specifically to run it that way, under gdb. doesn't work, either way.

Okay, so the crash is inside libcurl. I'd really like to try to produce the crash on my own system to see which side has the problem.

What is the version of your libcurl package? We might be using a curl functionality that isn't supported on CentOS's version.

well, I tried running Xonotic on my centos-6 eeepc, where it runs fine, given the rather severe limitations of that particular hardware platform.

so I stole the libcurl from that system and placed it in the "main" directory of xonotic on my centos 5.6 system. added statement to the *glx.sh script to set LD_LIBRARY_PATH to the path of the libcurl I added and tried running it.

result: no difference, it still dies in libcurl.

but oddly, when it dies (under gdb) it still reports /usr/lib/libcurl.so.whatever, NOT the one I placed there for it to use.

apparently there's something I don't understand about how it uses/accesses libcurl... I'd expect LD_LIBRARY_PATH to be the right tool to use.

In some cases, LD_LIBRARY_PATH is ignored, namely, when the executable uses a DT_RPATH section. That one takes precedence even over LD_LIBRARY_PATH.

Try LD_PRELOADing your other libcurl instead.

did that then had to follow up by bringing over another half-dozen libraries and adding them to LD_PRELOAD, then finally it wanted a newer libc.so.6, so I brought it over too. after that trying to run the program results in:

./xonotic-linux32-glx: error while loading shared libraries: /home/fredex/myfiles/programs/xonotic/Xonotic/libc.so.6: ELF file OS ABI invalid

so I guess I'm scrod at this point. Not sure if I want to go to the additional hassle of finding a libc.so that fulfills the xonotic requirements AND runs on my platform. Perhaps when I get around to upgrading the OS on this machine I can then come back to xonotic.

I can indeed reproduce the issue on CentOS 5.6. Now trying to get the compiler to work, so I can see if I can fix it.

I think I found the issue. A fix will soon be available.

Not sure if we will release a hotfix for this though, as CentOS (and even an outdated version of it) is not exactly the platform of choice for gamers. But you can try tomorrow's autobuild.

This is actually a bug in our code, but libcurl contains a workaround for that for 5 years now since curl 7.16.1, which is why it got unnoticed:

BTW: CentOS' 5.7 directory already contains this workaround, too.

So your options are:

- tomorrow's autobuild containing a fix for this issue
- install a newer libcurl version from sources, and set LD_LIBRARY_PATH to use it

Yes, it'll work without the fix on CentOS 5.7 once it's out. Also should work on CentOS 6.0 without the fix.
