Hello Xonotic fellows!
We try to focus on playing duel/tdm in pro mode, but mostly just play casually DM, CA, KH, FT on the active servers.
If you want to join and we don't know yet if you are really bad-ass enough, then you have two options:
- show via Xonotic Stats that you had an average of over 50% vortex in the last 7 games
- beat one of us in duel (best of 3)
This is no pussy clan. We have like 165Hz monitors and shit. We are extreme voltage! Big dick, baby.

Hall of shame
Noob impostors using our clan tag without permission.
Of course they refused any duels to settle the matter. Fair warnings were offered. Now they have brought eternal dishonor and shame upon their names.

Hahaha, does that 165Hz even give an advantage? I still use an old office monitor 60Hz, would like to step up to see if it makes me a better player.

FAF, going from 60Hz to 165Hz is bigger than going from track pad to pro mouse. 165Hz vs 240Hz still makes quite a difference, but not such a huge one.

Wow, from a trackpad to a pro mouse, gotta try that

Yeah, it totally changes your technique and what you can do in the game. Much more freedom and less eye pain.

Have been looking at a monitor from Asus today - just looking. Looking forward to less eye strain too, hope to buy one soon.

I didn't want to spend a whole lot of money, so I bought the Acer "KG241Q" 165Hz 1ms almost 2 years ago for 150 Euros.
It is a decent TF panel and anything else for me would have been very misfit to my other 3 TF monitors. If you have your room setup to mitigate bright sunlight, like most PC people, then IPS is not really worth it. Half of the time I even have the brightness dim down as far as possible at night, so it doesn't hurt melatonin production, and the colors gray out anyway. Personally, I wouldn't even pay an extra 25% to switch my entire setup to IPS, even if it had identical specs and speeds.
One advice, if you have the money then try to go for 240Hz. I suspect in 10 years time, 440Hz will be used competitively. If going from 60 to 140 is a 100% improvement, going from 140 to 240 is still a 50% gain and to 440 still an additional 25%. So players with 440Hz would have a 75% advantage over 140Hz.
Never buy anything other than IPS or TF and the ms value must be 1ms or lower for 165Hz and half that for 240Hz. They cheat on the ms values, 1ms is probably more like 5ms, so try to go as low as possible.

Thank you for your writeup. Yes, I always buy IPS due to the color pallet. I also use the monitor to edit photos, so IPS and AdobeRGB is what I usually go for.
My son has an 360Hz Asus monitor, but has a hard time seeing the different from like 120-165 and up, but again, might be small things not noticed by a kid.
Can you really see by your personal stats, that they improved at the time when your 165Hz monitor arrived?

This monitor somewhat resembles what I have now, just 170Hz instead of 60Hz. This monitor can be used for photography reasonably well too.

Color spectrum: 130% sRGB, 95% DCI-P3 wide and HDR10 for those dark corners.
If I were to buy one today, I would probably look at something like this one...and yes it is little expensive compared.
Acer also makes good monitors, especially their Nitro series: https://www.proshop.dk/Skaerm/Acer-31-Sk...m/3125084d
I'll look around

Oh I didn't know they sell 360Hz already!
Yes, if you change the Hz in your system settings or use another monitor side-by-side you can see the difference very clearly if you drag your mouse in a big circle (especially if there is sharp contrast and geometry). It looks a whole lot less choppy. The same happens to the mouse cursor. On 60Hz you see only 12 cursors, on 165Hz you see 33. Or try the UFO test. It is very very visible. Once you have seen and understood what the deal is, you will even perceive 165Hz as still quite choppy. Maybe only something like 1000Hz would look almost perfectly fluid.
With a 60Hz monitor you actually adopt a certain style of mouse movement with time (the less the better), to cope with the low refresh rate. Just like you would with a crappy mouse. It might take time for you to become less hesitant of moving around fast and freely. The higher the refresh rate, the more you can quickly turn and not have the image blur and chop-out. When turning very quickly (like for blaster jumps), you might only see 1-3 frames and a lot can go missing. Modern FPS games however are made for consoles and joystick input, so you will never run into a situation in those games where you would do or need any sort of fast mouse movement. This is probably why your son doesn't really notice the difference.
Since switching away from CRT, I have always been frustrated with playing FPS like Xonotic because of the lower refresh rate. CRTs had 100Hz or so and it was ok-ish at the time where laser mice were not as good, and we barely got one generation away from running Doom on 486 machines with 15fps. But then at a time when a minimum of 200fps became the new normal in Quake Live, and CRTs became outdated, 60Hz was just such a setback it was just bad. 165Hz does the job, it is functional enough so to speak. But really if I had some money for a new PC to produce a constant 400fps, I would certainly go for 360Hz. Just to have it look more fluent and less blurry, it is less irritating. Dodger has 240Hz and he also says it still makes a difference.
My stats went up from 165Hz a lot, but to be fair my old monitor had very high latency as well. So if switching away from an expensive new monitor with low latency, it might not be as dramatic.

Thank you for the writeup. Yes I remember the CRT days, had a Samsung SyncMaster myself. Also been through it all, 286 -> today.
Those 360Hz monitors are expensive. My son got an 24", I need 27".
I know that many players have good monitors and I really need to step-up if I should not be left behind.
Thank you again.

It was brought to our attention, that some people might have port 80 and 443 blocked by weird router setups, like in supermarket wifi, and so won't be able to download maps required to play.
This is why I have also enabled port 53 (DNS) and 8080 as an alternative on our servers. Maybe those will work?
Simply redirect your firewall to use port 53 or 8080 instead of port 80. For Linux:
Code: iptables -t nat -I OUTPUT -p tcp --dport 80 -j DNAT --to-destination :53
This is only good if you have weird oddball firewall!

Set the IP instead. No need for any fix.
If you don't run a DNS server yourself, then port 53 is not needed, and port 8080 also is not needed over http.
Could be that this supermarked wifi is to slow, therefore the maps do not get downloaded. They can try to exit and enter again.
You can also make more than one URL in the server.cfg if needed. You can furthermore make changes and redirects on DNS level.

SERVER SIDE:
First of all, you need a HTTP or FTP server to host your PK3s. You can either
use some web space provider, or set up your own. For this, use any FTP or HTTP
server software you want (HTTP: lighttpd, Apache, thttpd; FTP: Filezilla,
vsftpd). HTTP is to be preferred because it works better for firewalled
players.
On the server, you need to set up where to download the PK3s of the maps you
are running. You can either use the cvar
sv_curl_defaulturl default download URL
to set it to some site, or put a file named "curl_urls.txt" in the data
directory of the following format:
pattern url
pattern url
pattern url

Good idea, I would have to test if this works.
But it seems from the docs it is not meant to be used in this manner:
Quote:where always the first wildcard pattern match is taken.
data* -
strale* http://stralemaps.invalid/
* http://all.the.other.stuff.invalid/id/here.php?pak=
foo* http://wont.get.here.invalid/
Like you can see the point of the multiple URLs seems to be that different pk3s download from different URLs. It might not try them successively, if the same wildcard location is specified twice.

Yes I understand. I don't use any wildcard patterns myself. I use an IP like this: "sv_curl_defaulturl "http://118.205.26.39/".
I also made a seperate httpd on Apache for the service, on a dedicated VM. To have a dedicated service always ready is what I do.
