Blast from the Past - anniversary "rat" map

#1
Hi! I created this map for Quake 3 to celebrate the game's 25th anniversary. However, since Xonotic allows using maps directly from Quake 3, I’m sharing it here with you Smile If you like it, I might create a version specifically for Xonotic.

"Blast from the Past" is a personal retrospection and an attempt to recreate the old apartment where I grew up in Poland. I wanted to once again feel the atmosphere of that time, so I filled it with many memories from the past. You'll find interesting stuff from the 1990s and 2000s (and beyond) that might evoke nice memories for you as well. But above all, the focus is on the joy of gameplay.

To ensure this, I prioritized maintaining a scale and arrangement of objects that would allow for dynamic and smooth gameplay, making it enjoyable for everyone. Whether in 1-on-1 matches, team games, or classic FFA mayhem, the map is sure to provide lots of entertainment!

Unlike my previous rat maps "reqbath" and "reqkitchen", the size of this map is smaller, with locations made more accessible for all players and bots. The challenge was to preserve the accurate dimensions of the interior, as well as the furniture and objects within it. I adopted a scale where 1 centimeter in real life equals three units in Radiant.

Creating this map brought me immense joy and serves as my nostalgic return to mapping after 16 years. I hope you'll have just as much fun playing it alone or with friends. Smile

As is tradition, the map features secret locations with various bonuses, but they won't work with Xonotic Sad

If you want to try, be my guest <3 You can download this map from:

A new Requiem map?! YES PLEASE!!!

Always been a huge fan of your maps (and any "mini man" maps really), super excited to play around and discover the little secrets in a brand new one!

Thanks for sharing it here! A version tailored for Xonotic would be awesome; we've got a lot of people who enjoy goofing around in maps like this too Smile

Looks great but why would you prohibit editing the map?

I do not completely forbid editing the map! If someone wants to do it, I have no objections, but I want to be informed (and give my consent). It has happened before that I found my maps converted to other games without any information that I was the original author. Smile

Keep in mind Xonotic is 100% open source game content.

You are sharing your "closed source" work with an "open source" community.

I share the following only to illustrate ... I am going to be releasing a full fledged dungeon game that is 100% all open source (using the same engine they use here, DarkPlaces):

Open source is about giving back, sharing and growing.

Perhaps one day, you will have the strength and courage to be open source with your non-commercial works.

Oh, I see what’s going on here. Sorry, I didn’t think that sharing information about a map for another game (on the same engine, but with the possibility to run it here) just for fun would be an issue in this case. If I had created a version of this map specifically for Xonotic, then of course it would be entirely "open source" as intended. But for Quake 3, I made it on my own terms.

If this thread violates the rules, then I apologize for the issue and kindly ask for its removal. Smile

Nah it's alright. I was curious why people decide to make their maps closed source as sometimes it's kinda unfortunate when you want to build upon it.
Especially when the author becomes unreachable and doesn't really care anymore.
Getting credit where it's due I can completely understand.

My mindset is a different thats why I also want to understand where you're coming from. In my world I make maps for the community to have fun and recognize. If that means they take my work and build something different with it I'm also glad that I contributed to a net positive so to speak Smile

My ideas would have been mirroring/editing portions of the map to make a teambased derivative and check for compatibility. If I see fit.
I mean in your case it's viable to ask the author. But on the other hand it would also be unfortunate if I test stuff with your map just for you to say no after spending time editing and testing.

It will run on servers nonetheless, no worries Wink
