Any Audio FX Needed?

Hey Folks,

As always I'm happy to contribute where I can, are there any need for audio FX? I've got an extensive library of audio along with experience in foly work so I can make all sorts of weird and wonderful sounds.
Any requests, pop them here and I'll be happy to sort them out Smile

That's a great offer!

I don't know if this fits your interest, but what comes to mind are the menu sounds. Currently, they are silent placeholders, or the old-old-school sounds from a decade ago. A modern sci-fi theme would be pretty awesome.

Note however that new menu sounds will likely be met with some resistance. See this thread, where unfa posted a few concepts. The challenge is to make them interesting without being perceived annoying.

These are the files in question, if you would like to give it a try:

How about the chat sounds? They are a bit jarring, unlike say text message sounds on a cellphone.

forgive me, folks. I can't find the original files in my xonotic download. If it helps I'm running Mac!

Could you link me to where these files are stored in the online project?

TheAudioMonkey, the original files are inside of one of the "pk3" files inside of "Xonotic/data", specifically the "xonotic-*-data.pk3" file.  pk3 files are just renamed zips.  None of this is really important though, because DarkPlace's virtual filesystem allows you to override these from your userdata directory, "~/Library/Application Support/xonotic/data".

By placing your files in that directory, the will override the ones in the pk3.  for example:  "~/Library/Application Support/xonotic/data/sound/misc/talk.wav".

Hey,
Just got something in my mind. Well, the music I do is rather boring, because it's drony-like kind of music. I mean, textures and ambient. But! I might be suitable for Xonotic.
Would that be appropriate for background kind of music (the background sound from Xoylent, for instance)? I also got some cool tracks available.
And the other question would be: TheAudioMonkey, would you be ready to equalize/make them sounding better/master them (if I send them multitracked)?
Because if I know stuff about synthesis, I got no time nor the computer to do mastering. And I don't know much about this (planning to learn that later).
Tell me what you think about this.

That's true.
So here is a link. I would see this in space, I think.
Dunno if you'll like it. This is an old one, badly recorded (as I don't use any computer to make them, but only hardware gear). I also got some more of ambient/drone stuff. I ever you want to listen to it, tell me, that would motivate me to work on it.

Woah that's real good. Yeah I can definitely hear this working for space maps like Xoylent (however I personally have the music turned off when playing). I see what you're thinking.

For that particular song though, I think it would work really well on the loading screen. This is usually only up for a couple of seconds, but sometimes when downloading maps, it can be a lot longer. I feel like this music (specifically from the 1:00 mark and onwards) would be really nice to have as background music during the loading screen.

Note: I love ambient music and drone is great too, so I might be biased

Oh, cool you like it.
There is other stupid drone shit on my account too, if you like that.
In fact I just have to record it, but I'm so lazy I don't find time to do it, and I don't want to learn all the mastering stuff now.

Hahhaha nah I honestly think yours is better. It's nice and subtle which is good because if you're someone like me, who's looking at loading screens a lot, the music wouldn't really get old/annoying.

Hey dudes,
Just received a new synth yesterday. For those interested, that's an Elektron Digitakt.
Just need to find a way to record now, and I should be able to give you some crazy-ass tunes! I'd like to do something related to the original Nexuiz musics, like, drum'n'bass, jungle, with crazy rythms. Or mayber more ambient stuff. I'll see where this will get me.
Working on it right now, I hope I'll be able to send you snippets as soon as possible!

I know Smile And sometimes even better ahah.
But I like hardware synths (that's currently my job btw). And anything I will make (when I will start doing my own stuff) will be open-source/open-hardware, for sure.

Anyway, I did try to use VSTs and DAWs, and it didn't work really well... Dunno why. So many possibilities, so at the end, you don't even know where to start.
I usually think that a given workflow (that you got from hardware) forces you to think differently, and brings you where you didn't expect. Because you adapt, you see things that else, you wouldn't see. And because there are limitations, it brings creativity: try to get the maximum out of it.

But that's a whole debate ahaha

I'd love a distinct noise for frags (instead of the hit noise going off repeatedly, which feels wrong to me). Ideally (imo) a dinging noise of some kind

How hard would it be to produce some new 'ouch' sounds for the female player model? The current set sometimes sounds a bit.... porny... to me, and it's off-putting.

I agree on this one. I remember when I just started playing, in Oilrig, when the female bots are drowning, the sound would make my families come into my room to see what's going on.

Hmm, anyone with a bit more musical theory knowledge than I able to a good descending pair of notes / pitch? It sounds good as-is but it could probably benefit from a little theory.

I think the reason the suggested kill sound isn't that bassy is that it can cut throw those low frequency explosion, foot steps, and pretty much most of the env sounds.

That said, it's very personal.

Regarding the sound being musical, I think what you did (non-musical note) is nice. I personally found musical sound effects distracting.
