I won't be playing for a while.

My hard drive sputtered out and died a couple of days ago and it will be at least 2 weeks untill I can afford a new one ;_;

I can at least browse the forums on a liveCD though.

Unfortunatley not, but I didn't have that many important files that weren't in my ubuntu one account.

I can probably recover the data on the HDD considering that it worked for about 45 seconds after being in the freezer overnight. If i get a bucket of ice and put it in a watertight bag I should be able to keep temperatures low enough to get back my data :0

Look into specialized software for failing HDDs then, I know that exists (ddrescue for example).

It's a mechanical error, I need the metal to contract for it to read properly.

Or I could just buy a cleanroom and an identical HDD and swich out the platters :3

Sure, and ddrescue can resume where it left off if the drive fails while it's reading. This is why specialized software is interesting in that case; it can be gentle and fault-tolerant to squeeze as much data out of the failing disk as it can.

EDIT: Although I think ddrescue is meant for failing blocks more than anything. I probably sound ignorant with that example, but my point stands Tongue
