Quake 1 custom maps... what do?

Bit of nostalgia for you all,

I've gotten into playing Quake 1 again recently, after finding lots of sexy hd textures and modifications for darkplaces.
But I cannot remember how to play custom levels! I have the .bsp's in a "maps" folder in "ID1", now how do I play them in game/multiplayer?

And before anyone asks; No, I don't have anything better to do in my spare time.

iirc:

Singleplayer:
Open console
map mapname (without the .bsp)

Multiplayer:
Start server
Open console
changelevel mapname (without the .bsp)

Quake1 is never a waste of spare time.
