New DOOM multiplayer Alpha

#1
So will anyone here have access to the new DOOM multiplayer alpha that's being released this weekend?

If so let us know! Also let us know what the multiplayer is like Smile

Here is some nice game play of the Doom Multiplayer.

So far I really like what I see as far as TDM is concerned. Fast gameplay, item centric. Has quad damage and some demon transforming power-up thing. The game also comes with a translocator and its activated by a separate command key. Not like in UT where you have to equip it first then fire it. Also has damage text! Nice variety of weapons and quick weapon switches.

Some details I noticed about the weapons:

Assault rifle - didn't get to see much gameplay. 10 damage a hit

Plasma gun - just like Quake plasma gun except it seems to over heat after prolonged use and has a secondary fire that costs more ammunition and has a small explosive effect. 6-7 damage a hit Secondary does like 20 damage?

Rocket Launcher - Straight firing rocket launcher that seems to have an early denotation feature Smile Couldn't get to see a good enough clip of a full damage rocket. Im gonna guess 50 is max damage

Static Cannon - A weaker version of the rail gun that seems to fire slightly faster. (has a charge feature very similar to the Nex) Does 60 damage

Double Barrel Shotgun - Medium damage weapon. Only seems feasible in close range. Max damage seems around 70-75

Guass Cannon - One shot kill rail gun that can see through walls Heart
150 damage

Don't know if melee is like in COD where its one shot one kill. The jury is still out on that one. Over all I really like what I see. Now I just need a computer that can actually run it.

Looks like Toxikk 2.0 under the alias of Doom which borrowed UT's translocator and Halo's jump boost. No sign of bunnyhopping, strafe jumping/running or even rocket jumping, just another arena fps with an illusion of fast paced gameplay. I mean how do you make a fast paced rocket jumpy game into console in the first place? I know! Let's compensate for the clumsiness of the controller and completely deprive the genre of it's technical complexity and soul.

And if that's just a trailer thing then I don't think bethesda knows how to sell an arena shooter, let alone a Doom. A flaming demon cock right at the viewer's face would be a way better trailer, that's what Doom basically (symbolically) is and should be. Sorry for the sophisticated nagging, but I'm personally not very excited and had a coupel of beerws.. *gurp* ..

I'll save my eternal judgement till I play it. If all else fails we still have Xonotic Big Grin

Since it's gonna be heavily mod advocating game at some point in the future (as promised) maaaybe there will be some desolate mod as dead if not deader than Quake Live that somewhat satisfies the aFPS niche, but really gets us nowhere. They should have advertised what a rape of learning curve the genre really is supposed to be and not feed false expectations like this casual cinematic poop, assuming the game turns out to be on par with it's predecessors. I'm mostly just upset at what a waste of a title this is impending to be, aFPS niche could gain a lot from this.

Smilecythe, developers aren't going to make 'competitive' FPS games, when will people learn they don't work? Better off making a competitive scene out a game that is fun to play and what casuals enjoy also. Unfortunately hard-core players have lost there way, want ultra balanced games, similar weapons and a steep learning curve and similar if not same mechanics. Anything that breaks these boundaries is considered meh.

Your starting to sound like 'just another' ESR fan boy, the ones who want a new competitive FPS (see above), but if it's not (based on) quake, we won't give it a fair shake!

Like SPLAT I'll reserve judgement until trying it, has it been confirmed there is no strafe jumping yet or are you just going off that video?

Excellent post, pretty much nails why hard-core gamers feel jaded and left out in the cold. Fast-paced arena FPS games are not big sellers, the hard-core gamers who enjoy them are a tiny minority of players compared to the new generation of gamers coming in.

The trailer to me looks pretty exciting for what it is trying to be, and it's has a ton of curb appeal.

Doom, always reminds me of a single player game, so i have no expectations for this game at all, either i dont have much interest to play it player vs player. I'am die-hard old doom player, still playing some fan-made .WADs with zandronum port, but all games with co-op mode and ofcourse with legendary TeamKankipappa Smile If the new doom4 game is good, might check it out and play it with co-op mode when its finished, but leave the player versus player things for you professionals and for the ones who are interested.

If anyone gets in to the multiplayer beta though, i'd love to know how the game is!

Multiplayer alpha, sorry. Not beta

Fixed. Team Xonotic, Reakktor studio and Turbo Pixel are all developers as far as I know.

What's wrong with that? I don't want to play chess with a steering wheel.

Why am I ignoring rest of your post you ask? I'm here to nag like a ESR fan boy and not to debate points intellectually.

I think the only way this argument can truly be settled is a 1v1 in the new DOOM Multiplayer Alpha

If you want Doom so bad, Kojn all you have to do is Pre Order Wolfenstein The New Order from Gamestop and you'll recieve a code for DOOM BETA on your Receipt or in Game Case.

If the SP game won't adhere to modern practices but will focus on ultra violent demon genocide, I think it's going to be lot of fun. I grew up on DOOM 1 and 2 with arrow keys for movement and Ctrl for fire so I guess I can endure the lack of bunnyhopping in singleplayer. Smile

Is it just me or are they really playing that PvP game in the video with gamepad?! Gotta say, I also dislike the trend of making the gameplay easier to compensate for console handicap. Though I better wait and see.

In the meantime, use Brutal Doom:

I've heard various rumors that supposedly spread from alpha/beta/whatever testers that there won't be any kind of skill movement in Doom 4. Not even original Doom esque skill movement. You press forward key and you move at a slightly faster pace than you'd move in a generic shooter, that's about it. Ofc, I can't confirm it but the rumors so far have been pretty one-sided. So multiplayer will be quite boring for trickjumpers.. and I guess singleplayer will be quite boring for speedrunners.

Also: http://www.pcgamer.com/doom-will-not-get...o-snapmap/

So no modding either, jesus. This game will definitely be a blast, but not for the arena FPS niche. I guess there goes our last chance to get back into the mainstream again.

I am pretty sure we have the same argument every year when some new big "Arena" game comes up. Al the time the same arguments are repeated, and the same conclusions are reached. I think its time to stop pointing out obvious things again and again?

Doom-wise, i say that the game definitly looks cool and seems like a bit of fun, but the illusion of speed is, just, well, an illusion, and all we get in the end is another commercialised arena parody.
Generally, it seem to me that all games become more and more similar to each other with time. Be it Doom or Fallout 4, they give the same sort of impression: "Wow! Oh wait..."

Dunno how off-topic this is, as this is a DooM post on the Xonotic forum...
Anybody play DooM online with Zandronum?

Doom is not Xonotic so yes it's off topic. I use Zandronum, but only for mission packs.

Preview to some multiplayer modes. Yes there will be TDM and CTF. I don't know if it'll be purely item based. I think it will be Halo type gameplay. Meaning you spawn with two weapons and there might be a few pickups on the map. Here are the rest of the modes according to Reddit:

Arms Race, Artifact Attack/Defend, Bloodthirst, Clan Arena, Colossus, Conveyor, COOP, CTF, Deathmatch, Domination, Escort, Freeze Tag, Head Case, Hell Escape, Hell Gate, Hunted, Mission Command, Soul Harvest Struggle, Team Deathmatch.

Bunch of DOOM footage released. Looks pretty fun. This is still a beta version and its being played on the console. I'm sure there will be additional customization on the PC. Nevertheless it looks fun Big Grin
