Xonotic World Cup Series 2016/2017

#1
Hello Xonoticians!

We would like to present you a new series of Duel Tournaments called Xonotic World Cup Series that we plan to hold in 2016/2017.
We're introducing a "Minor/Major" system - similar to other popular games (e.g. CS:GO).

What does that mean?
  • A Major tournament has a bigger prize pool and features the best Duelers out there
  • The Majors have 16 player slots, while 12 slots are being filled with invites
  • The remaining 4 slots are played out in the Minor tournaments
  • The Minors are open to every player except the players who are already invited to the next Major
  • The top 12 players of a Major are automatically qualified for the next Major, the other players have to go through the Minor cycle and qualify again

The Minor tournaments should be a nice way for lower and medium skilled players to practise their Duel-game in a tournament and not going against the top players only. The successful players can prove themself in the Major afterwards!

All details regarding each tournament are written in the thread of the tournament.

This new format is awesome.
1) motivation for the minors to participate and get promoted to have a chance to play the big guys.
2) For the regulars of the major league, its always a good challenge
3) I think this system in itself is a great improvement environment for everyone. People will surely get better Tongue

Indeed Smile It is only a matter of time before every invited player need to practice to maintain that spot. Smile

I'd love to participate some time again, but unfortunately there is no way I can play at 18:00 CET :o( My availability usually starts earliest 21:00 CET - if we have a cup some day where we can mutually agree on dates/times to play the required matches, then I'll gladly offer myself as cannon fodder for the tournament.

I'm assuming this is EU only? What is the interest for something like this for American region (south and north).

American players are in the minority. There's been NA tournaments before, but they've always been filled with players from different continents. EU is where the majority of the playerbase is from and NA players often hop into EU servers/tournaments as well. Xonotic's netcode makes it somewhat tolerable to play with +100 ping.

Even in a very competitive situation like a duel? Can anyone share their experiences? Especially those of you that are really good.

There's a per month Duel event that's comprised entirely of North American players, but it's structured way differently (with a different intent too) than the events held on the Xonotic Forums.

Do you have a website or how can I get more info? Also, what do you mean by different intent?

We got a lot of new and not-so great players, so (I think) the overall atmosphere is to train players with duels (and some defrag). So it's slightly a pseudo-matchmaker for duel partners, not really heavily publicized shows of skill.

I see you on IRC so I can shoot you a message.

You're free to host any cup you want to see here. Smile

This tournament (Minor) is open to anyone, but played on EU servers. But I suppose you could try a one day cup for NA.

Well, you might want to ask SPLAT because he's probably most used to playing competitive duel on high ping. On my personal experience with 150-200 ping, entering teleporters gets bit hard because you lose all your momentum because with the ping delay you often have time to fly through the teleporter brush and hit some solid brush below it.

Projectiles are always going to be delayed, so there's no other choice than to get used to the delay.

Hitscans however are client side detected, which means that they will hit if your crosshair was over your opponent's hitbox when you fired and then deal the damage after the ping delay. This means that the opponent could basically walk behind a wall and still get shot, so it might feel shitty to them - but for you it's pretty easy to hit since you don't need to lead the shot. You won't be getting free hits though, you still need to aim properly and then you get rewarded accordingly.100 ping is still pretty comfortable and seamless compared to 150-200 though. Majority of my comp duels have been with around 50-90 ping.
