We want your help

#1
Information
Hey everyone,

So as many of you may know by now... we have planned a new release and are preparing for that as such, however we could use some help with a few things right now.

We really WANT to make a statement that Xonotic is generally ready for the future and we want to gather attention to it now, and in order to do this we need to reach a larger audience than some simple news posts to only a few outlets.

So, i'm coming here today to ask you all for help with one specific task.... Find as many linux/gaming blogs/newsletters/resources as you can and help us make a list of people to contact for spreading the word for our release. What we do NOT want you to do is to contact them yourselves, this would be bad. Instead, simply give us the contact information by posting it in this thread and allow us to send out to the media ourselves upon our announcement of release. I already have a small list of such outlets, but it is very much so open for improvement. Big Grin

Secondarily we could use help with finding a texture artist... We have a modeler to create new weapon models, but he is unable to actually create the textures for those models - Essentially, we're stuck.. unable to use the models leaving us with old and ugly models. If you have any idea of anyone who is willing to help us out here, send them our way. Some of us have looked into different modeling communities, but there have been no advances on that field yet. Anyway, this is of less priority than finding media outlets for the time being.. but still is very important to the future too.

Find as much information you can about potential contacts, especially if they have an email address or such. If you don't have time/can't find such information, just giving the website will still be a help too. Note: Don't post the email address in thread, but instead PM the address to me if you could.. This way the email can't be spammed or such.

Thanks, I wish you all luck.. and remember that this probably will help determine the future of Xonotic and its media attention. The better you all do with your search, the better off the project will be.

P.S.: We obviously are always looking for any other developers willing to contribute.. especially programmers. If you're interested, feel free to contact me: samual (at) xonotic.org

I don't know about pages in english but i do know about some in spanish:

http://www.vidaextra.com/
Their contact page: http://www.vidaextra.com/contacto

http://atomix.vg/
They don't have a contact page but they have an e-mail (which i wont post here)

I know some forums too but first i wanted to know if pages in spanish would work. If you need help translating or whatever i can help.

That's fine, the websites can be in other languages too -- We would need translated press releases for that sure, but we can find a way.

Only thing i'm worried about is whether those websites are particularly willing to publish something about opensource games -- They seem far more centered around big-budget commercial games and not Linux/opensource games.

We can still try obviously, so I will keep those sites in mind, but just saying.

The last related thing published on vidaextra was this:
http://www.vidaextra.com/fps/nexuiz-vers...disponible

Well, that and this about the nexuiz problem: http://www.vidaextra.com/juegos/fps/nexuiz

Basically any news about videogames is ok for them. I'm quite sure that if the 2.4.3 nexuiz version would have been released they would have talked about it. Tongue

About atomix i'm not at all sure but there is no harm in trying Smile

He has a video blog that he updates every week about Linux news. He covered open source games before (like 0 A.D.).
It does seem he's a bit late whit his next video. (looks like he is on vacation)

This actually could be interesting... I wonder if they're interested in such a project as ours considering we do also have a competitive aspect.

Thanks a mate - I did already have those four you listed below, but the others are very useful. Multi-language sites are very good for spreading the word Tongue

However I have one problem, I can't find/i'm not sure of contact information for a few of the sites you linked... specifically:
http://linuxos.sk/
http://www.abclinuxu.cz/

Can someone PM me if they can find a direct proper email address or such to send a press release to them? Or let me know of some other way to contact them properly.

http://www.hup.hu

Hup stands for Hungarian Unix Portal. I've already sent a lot of articles about Nexuiz and Xonotic there in the past. The reception was mixed, ranging from very positive to negative (and even obvious troll) critiques.

Soelen and theShadow started texturing the RL.

P.S. Sorry for this ugly way of quoting, but my phone had some problems with the normal way Tongue[/b]

ESReality already helped advertising the different Nexuiz releases on their site (though the reputation wasnt the best, the site is full of trolls anyway).
I'm sure they would like to advertise Xonotic.

On a side note, I forgot to mention this before. I would stop mentioning nexuiz so often when you do the news releases, and concentrate more on what has changed, new physics set (including strafing!), completely reworked weapons balance and all of the other things obviously, but yeah I know it's a fork of nexuiz but it's changed/evolved a lot, so I think you really need to make sure you point out the major points (which hasn't been done too well before if I'm being honest).

Another but it's a UK PC Magazine ( I think they included nexuiz once before on a CD? ):

Thanks, collected all listed so far.

Again keep it coming though, we really can never have too many media contacts.

Regarding translations btw.... Those aren't really a priority at the moment and don't really have to be sent on the same day as release. So don't worry too much about this - Also, there's a good chance foreign browsers know English too, especially e.g. Dutch/German browsers who can speak multiple languages.

However if you're available to translate for any of these languages, shoot me your email in a PM and i'll contact you if necessary: Spanish, Bohemian (Czech, Slovak), Portuguese, Russian

Those are the ones of which I still lack contact information for someone who can translate.

You are right that almost all Dutch people, probably German too, speak very good English. Indeed translations aren't really needed to them.
