[SOLVED] Video cards that are NOT recommended for Xonotic

#1
Here's something I wanted to start for a while. A list of video chipsets which have problems with Xonotic. I don't mean in terms of just being a bit slow but in terms of graphical issues, non-support of features required for realistic gameplay or failure to run the game reliably. If specific to one driver this is noted.

What makes a graphics chipset unsuitable for Xonotic?
- Lack of support of OpenGL 2.0: several included maps have Warpzones and without OpenGL 2.0, you won't see through them. Software emulation of missing features in driver may give very slow or incomplete rendering
- Broken graphics drivers which give rendering artefacts
- Really bad drivers

This is to be added to feel free to make suggestions although just because you get 199fps and you really want 200fps, doesn't mean the card is bad enough to get on this list. This list is for the real problem hardware! Big Grin

Be aware not every model may be listed, many cards have a Pro/Ultra/GT/GTX/GTS/XT/GS model name tagged on, it should be considered for this list that they'll generally function the same. Laptop models will generally be similar, but not always.

==========
ATI/AMD:
==========
For reference please view this list of all ATI/AMD cards: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_...sing_units

All pre-Radeon cards, eg Rage, Mach, All-in-Wonder. No OpenGL 2.0 support, too old to see much driver support.

Radeon 7xxx, 8500, 9000, 9100, 92xx, All r100 and r200 series cards and onboard Integrated Graphics Processor (IGP) do not support OpenGL 2.0

Radeon r300 series cards using official Windows driver show warpzone issues:
http://forums.xonotic.org/showthread.php?tid=3759
Linux r300 driver is OK!
List of effected cards is long: 95xx, 9600, 9700, 9800, X300, X550, X600, X1050, Xpress 200, Xpress X200, Xpress 1100, Xpress 1150

==========
NVIDIA:
==========
For reference please view this list of all NVIDIA cards: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_...sing_units

All pre-Geforce cards, eg. Riva, Riva TNT, TNT2 - Lack OpenGL 2.0 (or 1.3!) support.

Geforce 4 and earlier - No OpenGL 2.0 support
This also includes Geforce PCX4300 and derived onboard graphics in NForce 1 and 2 chipsets.

Geforce FX running Nouveau driver - No OpenGL 2.0 support, graphical issues.

Any card running Forceware 70 series or earlier - No OpenGL 2.0 support in these older drivers. Update your drivers to Forceware 75 or newer.

Any card running the old 'nv' driver - This driver is now discontinued, users wanting an open source driver should use Nouveau.

==========
Intel:
==========
For reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_...sing_units

Intel740, lack of OpenGL 1.3 or 2.0 support

Extreme Graphics - Lack of OpenGL 2.0 support

GMA 900, GMA 950, GMA 31xx - Lack of OpenGL 2.0 support
GMA3000 (confusing!) and later should be fine.

==========
S3/Via:
==========
For reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UniChrome
NB: Modern Via chipsets are rare, there is limited experience of running Xonotic on this hardware, if you have one by all means contribute your experience!

CLE266 - I tried running The Big Benchmark on one of these once. I think it's still going. No OpenGL 2.0 support..

KM400N onboard graphics - No OpenGL 2.0 support.

As far as I'm aware this is the only Via hardware Xonotic has been run on. The rest really might be just as bad. They still sell some chipsets but with existing experience, they can't be recommended.

==========
Matrox, 3dfx, SiS, PowerVR and others
==========
All old designs now, no OpenGL 2.0 support, driver support for modern systems is problematic, very slow. Not recommended.

This info could be very useful and might be something that should be available from the main page via something that reads "GPUs not suitable for Xonotic" in a "support" section ("system requirements does not really fit as it is a negative list). I figure quite some people that stumble over Xonotic would like to know whether their GPU can handle it before downloading it...

System requirements doesn't seem to work so well anymore anyway. Hardware progresses slower and you have multiple generations which are near enough the same meaning that saying 'Geforce 6 or later' for example would not have a great deal of meaning when there are much more recent onboard graphics which won't work.

For the Googlers, here's an attempt at a more or less complete list so that search engines may point 'Xonotic [ancient graphics card] in this direction. Xonotic will not work well on the following AMD and NVIDIA cards:
3D Rage, 3D Rage II, Rage XL, Rage Pro, Rage 128 VR, Rage 128 GL, Rage 128 Pro, Rage Fury MAXX, Radeon VE, Radeon 7000, Radeon LE, Radeon 7100, Radeon SDR, Radeon 7200, Radeon DDR, Radeon DDR VIVO, Radeon 7500 VIVO, Radeon DDR VIVO SE, Radeon 7500 VIVO SE, Radeon 7500 LE, Radeon 7500, Radeon 320, Radeon 330, Radeon 340, Radeon 8500, Radeon 8500 LE, Radeon 9000, Radeon 9000 Pro, Radeon 9100, Radeon 9200, Radeon 9200 SE, Radeon 9250, Radeon 9500, Radeon 9500 Pro, Radeon 9550, Radeon 9550 SE, Radeon 9600, Radeon 9600 Pro, Radeon 9600 SE, Radeon 9600 XT, Radeon 9700, Radeon 9700 Pro, Radeon 9800, Radeon 9800 XL, Radeon 9800 Pro, Radeon 9800 XT, Radeon X300, Radeon X300 LE, Radeon X300 SE, Radeon X300 SE HyperMemory, Radeon X550, Radeon X600 Pro, Radeon X600 XT, Radeon X1050, Radeon Xpress X200, Radeon Xpress 200, Radeon Xpress 1100, Radeon Xpress 1150

How's that for SEO?

How about releasing the big benchmark as a standalone app (say, a 50mb download?) that people can run?

It would be a lot more than 50Mb. All of the engines and libraries come to ~100Mb uncompressed, then you need everything in Stormkeep in an unadulterated form. If a single file is different then it is not a benchmark. By the time you've done this you'd be in the hundreds of Mb and to be honest wouldn't you rather people were able to play the game too? Big Grin

To establish what Xonotic can/can't run on shouldn't take too much more than the existing results that are already posted. We just have a few gaps. So anything Geforce 6, 7, Radeon Xxxx, X1xxx, X2xxx, Intel GMA3000 and anything obscure that might work is worth testing.
