Music style brainstorming

#51
Anybody likes music like this from Quake I? Or Quake II? Personally I'm not a great fan of the second soundtrack - it's a bit too painful.

Anyway - I can sing and make beats in Hydrogen Big Grin It has some good samples of acoustic drum kits.

If someone plays guitar and or bass guitar, we migth play together and compose something more "classic" than pure electronic Smile

Just my way to listening music in-game.
I never listen in-game music. Just because I play Nexuiz too much. The same song, again and again. I can't bear it.
When I play "normal games", I always got iTunes or VLC playin some playlist.
When I play 1on1's or matches, no music at all.

My 2 cents
Awesome, did Qz show you that ?
Nexuiz : I Reach the top5 of the ladder (even top3 I guess). Top1 French for quite some time (when active) of ladder. Top5 of some tournaments (if I remember well)

My opinion on Xonotic music: All music is nice and appreciated, and I like some of the current songs too. But if you ask me, the current music in Xonotic is pretty... well, weak for FPS game. It doesn't sound intense enough, and enough like good combat music.

For a combat game, one would expect something darker and heavier, that gives a feeling of "special" as you listen to it. Something more styled and heavy metal themed sounds best to me. The current music is nice, but too simple and rather ambient. I think one could use many of the songs in Xonotic for a puzzle game even.

Here are some examples of exactly what I wish Xonotic could have. I know most are from UT2004 again... just that this game got so many things right I use it as an example for many components Tongue But yeah... if Xonotic had music like this, then OMG, that by itself would likely increase our player (and developer) count a lot.

I'm not saying they are bad! What I meant is that for Xonotic, I think the style would need to differ a bit, if we wish to increase it's... well, intensity Smile

And I like some of your songs. Haven't listened well yet, but they sound pretty. Not sure which I'd vote to see in master, but their idea is good.

Think I prefer the current music to that of UT2k4 of all arena games. If anything, there should be some ideas taken from the more techno-heavy music in Unreal Championship 2, or some of Unreal Tournament's (99) more ambient/trance tracks if we're going to be looking at other games for ideas. As far as menu is concerned, I think SC0RP nailed it in his first menu theme (which is no longer on Sound Cloud unfortunately) which gave me an excellent impression of what the game would be like and was long enough to enjoy as I made my initial settings to the game such as my controls and graphics settings. Unfortunately he never uploaded the source to that. I think I like the direction Xonotic's soundtrack is moving for the most part.

Here's my favorite track from Unreal Championship 2 called Transistor. It was put together specifically for a CTF map of the same name, but also plays on CTF-Recoil one of my favorite maps of all time.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJcqy9zhC34

Here's the second version of SC0RP's menu theme, this version got too hectic in certain parts though whereas the first version was almost perfect in my opinion. I actually have an MP3 version of the original lying around somewhere, but won't upload it without SC0RP's permission.

I love Sc0rp's menu theme as well and would strongly recommend to include it at least SOME place in Xonotic - it would be a shame to let such a nice piece of music lie around on soundcloud if it has been offered to this project. Whoever decided not to include it, think again. Whoever didn't make the decision not to include it but could make the decision to include it, think again, too!

THIS

That song should totally replace the existing menu theme IMO... though I don't understand why it hasn't already. Again, not to say the existing one is BAD. Just think this one would be a lot nicer is all.

For those who haven't heard it already: http://soundcloud.com/sc0rp/xonotic-theme-tune-v-2 I think I'm actually going to mod my own checkout of Xonotic to use this tune again Smile

On a separate note and post. I was talking about music and looking around the website earlier, and found a song in the map voting area that sounds a lot more like the style I'm having in mind. Hope it will be approved in master soon Smile http://www.xonotic.org/mapping/recommend...deroar.ogg

One of the main reasons why none of SC0RP's menu themes were approved if I'm correct was that the sources weren't uploaded. Another reason is that Rising of the Phoenix (which is still a damn fine track) was accepted as the menu music. It should also be noted that he made two versions of another track I like which is completely different than his initial menu theme. Again, only the second version of the track is online at the moment, but fortunately that one is a lot better than the initial one (which I have saved on my machine), whereas both versions of his menu 1 theme is like comparing Armored Core 3's Artificial Sky 1 and 2 tracks in that they are similar, yet different enough to be used in the same game.

SC0RP Menu 2 Remix (best version in my opinion)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPpFlg-LT...r_embedded

In my opinion, Menu 2 wouldn't necessarily be suited as a menu theme, but actual gameplay would rock. The immediate first thing that came to my mind was the first time I assaulted AS-Highspeed in UT99 which is a very good thing. I frag to this track whenever I play that map actually.

Good ol' Codename Tenka. Another interesting pre-Sony-owned-Psygnosis game, the demo version of that was actually the first fully 3D FPS to hit the streets, NOT Quake or even Quake's demo (though the full retail version didn't get released until 1997). If your looking at that for ideas, you may also want to look at a bunch other old school Psygnosis developed games for ideas as they really kicked ass at techno and electronica and had a style that no one else has. The first three WipeOut games are obvious titles to look at, now that I think about Cold Storage who did a bunch of tracks has uploaded quite a bit of his old Psygnosis music to be listened to for free including stuff from WipeOut, Colony Wars, and Codename: Tenka.

So heavy bass, and compressed drums is the style? Distorted or Modulated melodic parts should fill in the heavy style your looking for. I'll get to work on that.

Edit: Dubstep-ish?

Don't really know how to describe it, but I've always been able to tell something was developed by Psygnosis strictly by it's soundtrack.

Sonic Mayhem's Quake 2 soundtracks are fucking kickass! I also like his Q3's soundtracks and I think something between Q2 and Q3 would fit in Xonotic well. Style would be somewhat a mixture of industrial/noise, electronic and groove metal.

Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7YkHy9yBSI

Or maybe like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78cCEPL_MLY

I'm studying this style myself at the moment and might send something over if I can make things sound good.

I love the current music in Xonotic, it really fits the game imo, all tracks have some sort of unique touch, and I think that's great.

Even though UT2004 and Q2 have kickass tracks, I think it would be better to maintain the current unique style instead of kinda copying other game's soundtracks, but that's just my opinion Smile

I'm already working on a track, it's VERY far from finished, but it's a beginning, lots of stuff still needs to change (mastering, overall composition, and more). Here's the link: http://soundcloud.com/deshaadman/concept...ce-work-in

Please keep in mind that it's far far from perfect yet, so criticism is very useful for me atm and feedback is mostly appreciated! Tongue

I got an idea for Xonotic's music :-)!

I love the existing music, but it doesnt fit in well(in my opinion ofc). Tongue

I got this idea of some techno metal in Xonotic, I think it would fit in quite well. I got this idea from Quake 2, but I think we should use more techno than metal in the songs.

Here is a song from q2 so you guys get what I mean:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WojopwjrsnY

...but with more techno(as I said before xD), so it matches Xonotic's futuristic theme while being quite fast and heavy which fits in Xonotic's gameplay! Big Grin

I already love Xonotic's music though this is just an suggestion, I also think orchestral music like in Nexuiz's menu theme has would fit quite good too.

I think Nexuiz 2.5.2 got music style perfectly. Dark, tense and adrenaline pumping. Current Xonotic music in quality is very good, but style IMO doesn't fit that well (excepting meltdown and traveler).

I think the music is perfect atm, and fits each map very well from what I've heard.

I especially love the themes in Solarium, Stormkeep, and Runningman, they fit extremely well Tongue

The one in runningman is crazy like the map itself. The one in Stormkeep is more epic, just like the map Big Grin, and the one in Solarium just feels 'cold' and futuristic, which fits the overal color and shape of the map.

machine, about that track, it's damn awesome and I listen to it on my mp3-player each day, but I don't think it'll fit for Xonotic, because it's more for something "rusty" like quake 2, but that's just me talking, dunno what other people think about it.

What do you guys think of this for example? I made it myself: http://soundcloud.com/deshaadman/mental-...didate-for

It's pretty much something between Xon and Quake, rough and futuristic at the same time.

Halogene liked it Big Grin

I agree that the current music style isn't the best. And we need something more dark, heavy, intense and awesome.
