New open source game: AAAAXY

#1
If you've wondered about my forum avatar - it's released now (but in alpha stage, meaning I'm polishing it and not publishing it to other sites than GitHub yet).
https://divVerent.github.io/aaaaxy/

If you're familiar with Warpzones from Xonotic, enjoy warpzones in 2D in AAAAXY!

Speedrunning is supported, of course. Aim for <15 minutes in an any% run, for example, or <1 hour for a 100% run (probably ~10min and ~30min are possible, respectively).

Nice game, the music and graphics are all good and it also ran well in wine. I was surprised that you used GLFW. I played 15 minutes maybe until I had to press esc as instructed by the game.

I think though it is very hard for a platformer to excite anyone nowadays. I am always looking for very exceptional things these days, like game mechanics and (god hope it is non-graphical) artistic expression. Games are really not experimental enough. And I don't mean "experimental" in a way that's like this one small thing the designers dared to risk adopting, that then turns out to be one giant clunk in the otherwise totally conservative inside-the-box game design. I think for experimental stuff to be successful, it should if anything feel like there are always dozens and dozens of small odd things or clunks everywhere. But then by the time you got through so many of them, it obviously still works out in the end.

Anyway, sorry for not being too excited about your game. I know it is lots of work. It scares me too.

I am a bit into Godot game dev myself and I sometimes think about new ideas I could try. But what I have in mind is either often just too much work, or too political / educational. Also music and graphics are not really my thing ... which is like most of the work nowadays.

Yeah, I guess this game does present a huge new thing (2D warpzones, IIRC never been done before) and a whole bunch of smaller ones (although it takes a while to get to that), as well as a lot of trolling, but graphically - well, I clearly am not an artist Smile

My big hope would be some "more complete" game adopting the idea, but with a more modern art style.

But yes, I am aware that other games doing similar things in 3D (where it's easier) also have only really been appreciated by a rather small crowd - and thus clearly fits the same niche, except even more extreme.

(BTW, I intentionally didn't do any walljump/doublejump trickery... only few games pulled this off well, in particular Celeste, while often it's just a "well, you can jump a bit higher" mechanic which is rather boring and just adds complexity for no reason)

It looks good though, simple but very polished. And the music is good too.

I still don't understand how the power jump works though. In the turtle room, I was able to jump to the ceiling 5 or 10 times by pressing some combination of xcvb and arrow keys. But when I just tried it at the beginning of the game I couldn't get it to work anymore. If this wasn't a bug it should be made clearer that you have this ability or powerup or whatever it is.

Oh, I see. Power jump is actually just jump pads like in Xonotic - I thought I get away without making a specific sprite for them, but I probably was wrong there.

Usually they're indicated by arrows pointing at them though, except in this room - where they're at the turtle's feet. For now I'm gonna add those arrows.

Thanks for the feedback! The game is meant to be obscure in places, but I guess "feet = jump" was a bit too much of a stretch - especially as turtles don't jump.

I now actually created a jumppad sprite to make these places clear.
Sadly this meant I had to "normalize" some jumppad sizes, to not create an excessive amount of sprites - in practice this means some speedrun routes may have become a few frames slower or faster (something I will not allow past final release without bumping the major version number).
Luckily we're still in beta though and I didn't publish on other sites than GitHub yet Smile

FYI now installable via Snap on Ubuntu, on https://divverent.itch.io/aaaaxy, and of course still on Github.

Agree it s seems cool too for me. I am fan of many games and off casino. I used to check bitcoin casino provides You know one of the main advantages of crypto gambling is that it’s safe and secure for players to fund their accounts. This is because crypto casinos use blockchain technology. This means all transactions are transparent, traceable and irreveresible.
