Whenever the melee weapon discussions were brought up before in Nexuiz, this was the main argument against them. I wholeheartedly disagree with the idea that Xonotic gameplay is too fast to be in range of landing a melee shot. Quite the contrary, many players in DM and CTF matches run straight at each other when they attack, and they bump into each other constantly.

I jokingly call it "humping" because that seems to be the strategy involved.

Having a melee weapon would make this a more dangerous scenario, so players could get hurt if they attempt the "humping" attack.

But even among skilled players in duels (1v1 matches) you can get close enough for a melee strike by predicting or tracking movement and cutting someone off.

I remember someone talking to Ares about melee weapons in Nexuiz, and his argument against them was that coding for it would be too difficult because it would require a whole new section of code that needs to be written. I wouldn't know how true that may be but he would know more than I. I wouldn't be against such a weapon, if it could be done correctly.

P.S- Regarding the secondary mac/mouse discussion. I use a Mac as well. I bought a Razer DeathAdder for $45. Well worth the little bit of money for this game, and for non-game use as well. (Don't buy the mac specific DA when you can buy the cheaper windows one and just dl the driver for the mac one for free Big Grin) I would recommend anything over the shitty mac mouse given to us Big Grin

Good point. I just didn't really think about it that way. I still think a pulse in all directions to shove a person away would be better than a melee like in Halo.

pfft pfft pfft....why cant we just settle for ye olde rifle butt? its quick, most other fps that have a good melee weapon implement it as such, it also stops there being any problem with changing weapon...
Needs new animations though, and probably specialist models.

Just my 2 pennycents...

I really don't like the idea of making a melee weapon offhand, unless its a shove. I can deal without using a push. I'd rather have no melee weapon if the only alternative is for it to be offhand.

Some type of push would be awesome, maybe like the opposite of a gravity bomb just not as strong . A push from all around the player.

Anyway as for melee, I think you should be able to punch somebody with the off hand to push them back and put some distance between players to avoid blowing yourself up at close range. I don't think it should be intended for fighting and I don't think it should do a whole lot of (if any) damage.

Well, there were numerous times where I have collided into another person during a CTF or DM match... But there are pros and cons for both arguments, so the only way to determine whether a melee weapon would fit in is through extensive testing or something.

I agree. I'd love to test it and see how it actually works. Maybe we could test some different ways of implementing it like people have mentioned.

I use the CR a lot whenever it's available. Almost more than Nex, because having the ability to headshot (which I do quite often) is invaluable, more effective than the Nex. Not to mention secondary fire as well. CR isn't useless, it's very nice.

I disagree to have such a melee weapon also with the laser, it's already to powerful in terms of you can jump around everywhere, you can already shoot people with it, it doesn't do near enough self-damage and ruins gameplay in my opinion, do not add another sodding weapon mode to it!!!!!!! That would effectively giving new player's 3 weapons to use, melee, laser and shotgun!

I heard the stories but didn't believe them at first. Now I witnessed it. People who don't recognize Tifa really exist. ;)

Besides one of them don't have a weapon other than bare hands in this video.

I like the weapon in that video. It's ranged, but not too far ranged. IIRC, that was one of the suggested weapons in the other thread. However, I would prefer something that isn't mechanical, maybe a ranged electric shock.

I think a melee weapon which knocks other players back is a good idea, but I see no reason why any player (out of ammo or not) should be restricted to fighting short range in a game with such fast movement. Selecting a melee weapon would be effectively the same as being completely unarmed. Moments where a shove or melee attack would be useful are frequent, but brief, so it would only be useful if it were an offhand function. The real question is, should you be able to use this to propel yourself like the laser is used now? Should it maybe replace the laser entirely, (infinite ammo would then have to be bestowed on the shotgun so that players always have something that actually shoots)

Damn good question. I think that a punch or a shove could propel a player back, but only if he/she/it makes contact with another player since the point of a shove would be to quickly put distance between you and your opponent.

It would be really hard to wield something that big off hand. Maybe a wakizashi or a knife, but the point of a melee would mostly be to put distance between players so a blunt weapon or a fist would probably be better.

I think a melee weapon would be a great addition to the game, for really only one reason: It'd be fun as hell.

Imagine this, someone is sitting in one spot continuously nexxing you and your team. One time you manage to sneak behind him and he has no idea you're there. Nothing would be more rewarding than killing him with some sort of melee weapon. He tries to do it again, same spot? You do the same thing, making him feel stupid. Also, melee battles would be a lot more fun than laser battles.

As for actual implementation of the weapon: I really like how the Gauntlet works in Quake 3. I don't want to see a third weapon given to everyone at start, so I'd like to see it added to the laser. If you hold down the fire button on the laser, it creates a large glow of whatever the laser shoots, when this touches someone it does some damage. When you let go of fire after getting this glow, the laser wouldn't shoot a laser shot, it'd just go away. So you'd have two fire modes for the laser, quick tap of the fire button would be normal laser action, hold it down and you get melee ball of death.

Damage on the melee part would have to be tuned, but ~50 doesn't sound unreasonable.
