When i use to play multiplayer only games, i think about them in a generated simulated world where they train at fighting each other before going into the real battle.
So here's my idea:
In the year [insert random number], a huge war between [insert good people] and [insert bad bastards] was going on, for [insert random number] years. While the war was on, each soldier had to go through a training, a training that makes you the fastest and deadliest soldier ever known. Inside the ship [insert random name], a huge holodeck being bigger than Iceland itself, is used to held this training simulator known as Xonotic Virtual Tournament or just "Xonotic". Each soldier of its own kind, participate in this big virtual generated battlefield, creating a terrain of rocks, metal, water, jungle or even space. With vehicles and special weapons created by [insert military organization name] with of course other organizations depending on the species that participate in the tournament. Join the fight to become the greatest soldier ever known of all time by playing Xonotic today!
If I was thinking to wired or strange about it, it could be that I was listening to Miku + Dubstep.

meh ... to be honest .. I never liked the virtual reality concept ...
no chance for story development, or love stories, or epic battle sequences ... everything is just ... meh ...
although it does work for maps that make no sense in the real world (equinox, crappy nexuizmap retextures, and such)

Really, why do we need a story, a reason or whatever you´d like to call it? It doesn´t change anything and nobody asked for a reason anyway. Arena shooters are just senseless. Plus Xonotic is a pure multiplayer game, no singleplayer, no story, no need for any sense. Just. Play!

Seriously, regarding shooters i've never played any that have been worth playing for the story although I've heard good things about half-life I have never had the chance to play it. Halo is overated personally, I never understood the hype. Though at some point I might get around to playing Mass Effect or Farcry.
Hmm maybe this is just the olympics but what about an arena game themed story. No additional big cutscenes need be added just that there is an intergalactic tournament between the races for the grand prize of some sort.
Differing games like nex ball, speed running, ctf, deathmatch, etc... without it having to be apocalyptic. basicly f-zero with guns minus racers though technically we have vehicles.

for multiplayer a story makes no sense ....
Xonotic doesn't have a good singleplayer ... YET ... some developers like mario and MirceaKitsune are both doing development in the single player area ... (mario is doing some cool tower-defense thing with monsters and the turrets )
Single player games need a good story ... or else they feel kinda empty ...
Nintendo understands this story concept very well ... just look at paper mario (gc version), twilight princess, they even figured out a story for smashbros (brawl)
cut-scenes are also very important ... they give a game an overall feel ...
They can be annoying if the interrupt play ... but if they are interesting ... and placed in the right areas ... they can really add alot to the level that follows them

Hmm would still advise you check out F-zero GX. preceding each level are camera pan outs of the level from various angles with a short music interlude and the title of the level. its only 5 seconds but its a nice affect. this has nothing to do with story though. Its just an effect.

In F-zero GX, everybody starts at the same time. Here, you have map downloads, texture and model loading etc. that can delay the player's joining depending on their computer's performance. And people can join in the middle of a game, too.
Also, the first thing they want to do after waiting on that loading screen is to play, not to wait another five seconds to see something fancy they've seen dozens of times before. At least that's how I would feel about it.

So CutScenes cant work in MP. Then they should work in SP... hmm, If xontic wants nice effects and a good feel, it should have SP with some sort of a story...

The problem is that lots of people have great ideas for SP, but nobody wants to write any code for it.

That's not true. What about games like Mass Effect or Half-Life? But then again, I have reason to believe that he's referring to arena shooters. In which case, he has got a point.
I don't think a Xonotic story is really necessary, but it would be nice to have a mod or something... I'm not too sure...

Actually in regards to F-zero the 5 second clip was a loading screen. I don't know HOW that game economized so much. I only needed 2MB on my memory card for that game too.
